National Competition – Czech Horizon
Apart from its International Competition, an inseparable part of Anifilm has for several years been also a National Competition which provides the filmmakers with an opportunity to compete in the context of Czech film and the viewers with a unique comprehensive insight into contemporary Czech animation. This year, the competition includes in total 54 animated projects: 26 student films, 10 music videos and 15 commissions. There are also 2 short and 1 feature films which will once again compete in a single category. Apart from picking the winners of individual categories, the Council of Animated Film will also select the overall Best Czech Animation.
This year’s Czech Horizon is dominated by student films (some of them also compete in the International Competition). Students often focus on topical issues, aren’t afraid to address complex problems and create honest personal testimonies. Apart from many stories of various genres, we also noticed the enduring popularity of ani-docs. A complete list of the selected Czech competition films can be found here.
The winners of the national competition will be picked by the Council of Animated Films uniting more than a hundred film professionals, experts, theorists and festival programmers. The winners will be announced at the Anifilm Opening Ceremony planned for Tuesday 22nd June. Long live Czech animation!

Games Competing at Anifilm
Just like in previous years, Anifilm organises a competition of computer games. Unlike most Czech gaming conferences and events, Anifilm focuses on the artistic side of games and games for children. Our two competition categories therefore are: Best Visual Art and Best Game for Children. This year, our competition includes 15 games from the whole world including 3 Czech games. First is the atmospheric puzzle game Creaks by Amanita Design, second is Czech Television’s Cooking with Bears (Medvědí kuchařka) – an adaptation of the popular series Hungry Bear Tales. And last but not least there’s the atmospheric thriller from Czech woods Someday You’ll Return by the independent studio CBE Software whose environment artist Lukáš Medek was a member of the jury for games and VR projects at Anifilm 2020. A complete list of competition games can be found here.

Where will the Selected VR Films Take us?
Magical mushrooms populating dead Earth, queer gods and death in the form of a spider giving birth. The second edition of the Competition for VR Projects will once again take us into various absurd and crazy worlds. Even though most people have been stuck in some kind of virtual world for months and it may seem that everyone is fed up with virtual realities, the selected VR animated projects take us beyond the everyday routine of endless online calls and social media. For instance, five projects explore mysterious parts of the universe. The viewers can also look forward to traditional fairy tales and also experimental adaptations of poetry. Just like last year, the VR exhibition will have two parts – the VR Brainz Cinema will host 360° films and the Game Zone will host interactive VR projects. A complete list of the selected works can be found on our website.

Anifilm 2021: This Year, we’ll be Seeing you in June
Given the fact that the situation is unfortunately not improving as we would all like it to, we have decided – just like many other festivals and cultural events – to postpone Anifilm. The festival is therefore postponed from May and will be taking place from 22nd to 27th June. One of the many reasons behind this decision is our effort to guarantee the safety of the visitors and organise the program in full extent so people can visit all festival screenings, lectures, workshops, game days, exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances. After all, it is the main purpose of a festival to create a space filled with culture where people could meet. And without people who feel safe, culture loses its purpose. Purchased festival passes remain valid. In case you will not be able to use them in the new date, you will be refunded. Stay healthy and see you in the summer!
