Environmental Sustainability
Six years ago, in an agreement concluded with Liberec, Anifilm committed itself to running the festival in accordance with the principles of environmental sustainability, which is also Anifilm’s priority. EKO-KOM has become a partner of the festival, we have established collaboration with New Era Safety and we have registered with the Green Charter for Film Festivals. Anifilm is a member of the Animation Festival Network, and sustainability is one of the themes festival organisers are actively discussing there.
The Anifilm team is aware of its environmental responsibility and implements it in the following areas:
WASTE MANAGEMENT, RECYCLING AND UPCYCLING
We sort waste at all festival locations (plastic, paper, glass and metal waste).
We ship film copies electronically (with a few exceptions).
We have cancelled some printed materials (we have moved the information to the festival app and the festival website) and we have reduced the number of copies of other printed materials
A large part of the festival decorations is reused.
We use the textiles to make upcycled merch (the festival has been selling upcycled merch since 2023).
We do not through away unsold festival merch but continue to sell it online on our website.
We organise occasional swaps of animation and art supplies.
We do not use disposable plastic cups at receptions.
TRANSPORTATION
If possible, we offer our foreign guests a possibility to travel by train as an alternative to flying.
Part of the festival fleet is electric vehicles.
Our partnership with Flixbus means festival goers can purchase bus tickets on the Prague – Liberec – Prague route with a significant discount.
We are currently in talks with the Public Transport Service of Liberec and Jablonec about possible cooperation.
EDUCATION
We make sustainability an integral part of the festival programme. In 2021, sustainability was the festival’s theme; in 2025, we included the topic in the form of a presentation on sustainability in the audiovisual industry (in collaboration with New Era Safety) and a workshop focused on the production of sustainable materials for stop-motion animation.
Thanks to our partnership with EKO-KOM we occasionally hold workshops and use game elements for kids related to waste sorting (Tonda Obal).
DIGITAL FOOTPRINT
We have been trimming down the database of contacts to minimise digital footprint when we send out information and newsletters and announce calls, the amount of which we are also trying to reduce.
Next year, we would like to make progress in the following areas:
Compost and biowaste – we will introduce separate collection and processing of organic waste and reduce food waste (e.g. by donating surplus food).
Environmentally respectful materials – we will preferably use decorations, stage design and technical elements made from recycled or recyclable materials, try to reuse the materials and strive for easy and environmentally friendly installation and dismantling.
Programme integration – we will once again support projects that are environmentally focused, we will organise workshops, discussions and interactive elements for visitors related to sustainability for both adults and children.
Circularity of souvenirs (merchandise) and equipment – we will do our best to ensure that our merch and equipment can be reused, returned, upcycled or recycled – so that the festival does not produce too much material, but instead becomes inspiration for reusing.
We realise that responsible organisation of the festival is not a one-off, but a continuous process.
