Trips in Liberec

Liberec, a city filled with attractions

Just an hour’s drive from Prague lies a city encircled by mountains. From the northeast, the Jizera Mountains with the highest number of observation towers in the Czech Republic press toward Liberec and from the southwest, the Ještěd ridge leans towards the city; this ridge is crowned with the mountain hotel Ještěd, which is so atypical that it was awarded the title of Czech Building of the Century! The other pride of the city is the beautiful Neo-Renaissance town hall with a richly decorated interior and the 61-meter-high main tower with a copper statue of Knight Roland, the standard bearer who monitors the observance of the city’s rights and privileges.

Explore nature and cities

For a touch of nature, you can wander around the surrounding mountains, but you can also find it directly in the city – for instance in the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic and the neighbouring Botanical Garden, celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. You can also admire the colourful fragility of butterflies in the Papilonia butterfly house.

Immerse yourself in art

If you prefer art, visit the Liberec Regional Gallery, the fifth-largest gallery in the Czech Republic. Due to its collections containing more than 21,000 works of art from the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, France and the Netherlands, it is rightly described as a museum of European art. The neighbouring North Bohemian Museum is one of the biggest museums in the country. Founded in 1873, it is the first museum of applied arts in Bohemia. By way of contrast, the nearby Technical Museum displays historical automobiles, bicycles, motorcycles and public transport vehicles, though it only celebrated its 10th anniversary last year.

Smart entertainment for children and adults

With more than 400 exhibits testing your knowledge and wit, iQlandia offers smart entertainment for children and adults alike. Children can test their courage in DinoPark, housing several moving and often roaring models of Mesozoic animals. Another popular destination is the entertainment and social centre Centrum Babylon, with a waterpark decorated in the style of Jules Verne-style adventures.

But that’s not all

In order to enjoy Liberec with all your senses, treat yourself to the local speciality coffee in one of Liberec’s many stylish cafés, attend a concert or a theatre performance and try the local cuisine. When you get to know Liberec, you will find that spending just one day here is simply not enough.
