Kanga, Roo and Dingo the Dog

Ilja Novák | Czechoslovakia | 42 min

Foreign television stations still successfully broadcast re-runs of the Czech animated series Kanga, Roo and Dingo the Dog, which first aired in 1995. Without using dialogue, the series is a playful and inventive take on humorous stories starring animals. Kanga, little Roo and a parrot live together in Australia. Their days would be perfectly ordinary if it weren’t for Dingo the Dog. Every day, he tries to kidnap little Roo and eat him. Dingo comes up with various plans to get his paws on little Roo, but every time, sometimes at the very last moment, Kanga sees through his plans and saves Roo. As it should be in proper slapstick, Dingo subsequently pays for his mischief, but only to the extent that he can be the villain again in the next episode. Ilja Novák adapted a story by Jaroslav Boček in his own distinct way, imprinted his unmistakeable artistic style in the series and created captivating slapstick for the youngest audiences.

Bone-Chilling Slapstick

různí / various | 67 min

Sometimes we laugh so hard it’s almost chilling. Other times we laugh so hard our bones may rattle. Somewhere in between is a specific sub-genre of humour very popular in animation. We could call it morbid slapstick comedy. This kind of humour is popular not only among filmmakers (in particular, European) but also among viewers. It has many nuances. It’s often clad in absurdity we know from (among others) films of Finno-Ugric provenance (for instance In the Air and Sticky Ends). Other times it offers pure joy from straightforward, naively presented morbidity (The Clod, KJFG No. 5 and The God), but it can also be ironic and parodic (Bluebarry) or black (Happy End). In any case, the authors usually explore serious topics – often death – which they lighten up with specific exaggeration. This approach is typical and unmistakeable for specific authors (you can see for yourselves in A Single Life, Where My Home Is? and The Banker). Ultimately, this sub-genre can also include an animated pun, as is the case of the programme’s opening film – Walt Disney’s timeless, adorably morbid film with breathtaking animation, The Skeleton Dance.

Chicken Run

Nick Park | United Kingdom, United States, France | 2000 | 84 min | ZDARMA / Free Entry

At first glance, Tweedy’s egg farm is no different from any other egg ‘factories’. But behind the farm’s barbed wire, a rebellious spirit rattles the coops. Rocky, Ginger and their feathered friends simply refuse to accept the frustrating fate of being egg ‘mass-producers’ who will eventually end up in a pot or a pan. They spend their time carefully crafting, then carrying out their escape plans. With each failed escape attempt, their resolve, but most importantly their resourcefulness, grows.
The feature animated comedy Chicken Run references several classics of world cinema and openly admits that it drew inspiration from the famous 1963 film The Great Escape. Its heroes aren’t captured Allied soldiers, but seemingly simple-minded chickens and roosters made of clay by Aardman Animations. Just like other Aardman films, Chicken Run is characterised by superb animation and excellent dialogue. The film was made over 20 years ago but it’s even more topical than ever. The fight for chickens’ (and other animals’) rights successfully continues. The latest success in the Czech Republic was the ban on cage breeding, approved by the Czech Parliament in 2020.

Animation is Fun I

While some animated fairy-tales are rather serious, scary and educational, others aim to entertain children, make them laugh and provide the relaxation. This programme includes such films, chosen with regard to the festival’s theme of humour in animation and, as is customary for us, quality.

Masters of animated comedy are represented by, for instance, Aardman Animations, makers of Shaun the Sheep and the popular Wallace and Gromit. The films are made using claymation; they play with various film genres and are full of original gags. Humour is definitely present in the Czech (Czechoslovak) fairy-tales included here. An utterly unique phenomenon is shown by the adventures of two clumsy tinkerers Pat and Mat – this programme includes one of the newer episodes. Witty, gentle humour is the trademark of the lesser-known fairy-tale How the Elephant Feared Vaccination, based on a story by Miloš Macourek.

The Great Cheese Conspiracy

Václav Bedřich | Czechoslovakia, West Germany | 1986 | 50 min

Three mice lived in an old cinema. They lived off what they could find and every day they watched films for free. As the cinema often showed classic films such as The Great Train Robbery, the mice were fed up with eating peanuts the cinemagoers dropped and nibbling on the snacks in the projection room. One day Marvin, the tough leader of the mouse gang, said ‘We’ve seen dozens of films where they rob mail cars and safes. We can do better,’even though none of them had ever left the cinema before and they knew the outside world only from the silver screen. Regardless, these three little adventurers began planning the biggest cheese heist of all time. That was the beginning of a great adventure and everything that goes with it – such as Giovanni the cat, living in a cheese shop. In the end, the mice even got involved with the police.
This kind, humorous and thrilling mid-length adaptation of a French book will undoubtedly captivate even grown-ups. The protagonists of the film are brilliantly voiced by Josef Dvořák, Petr Nárožný and Luděk Sobota. Director Václav Bedřich made the film in co-production with West Germany, a feat not accomplished by many productions before the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.

Have you ever wondered what the bridge you are walking across has seen? Or what happens in the forest when you’re staring at the screen of your mobile phone during a walk? Specific poetics, various artistic approaches and allusions to the uneasy reality our heroes often have to face. Just like in the programme’s closing film The War that Changed Rondo, where peaceful beings are attacked by an evil force. But thanks to joint efforts and inventiveness their world, filled with flowers in bloom, is restored. This block of short films with no dialogue, made by young Ukrainian animators, was put together in collaboration with the Linoleum Animation Festival Kyiv.

Two Little Frosts

Jiří Trnka | Czechoslovakia | 1954 | 12 min

The only dubbing credit in Vlasta Burian’s career is the portrayal of a little frosty named Rudonoska (Rednose) in Jiří Trnka’s cut-out film Two Little Frosts. The film stars the king of comedy and Burian’s colleague and frequent collaborator, Jan Werich. Thanks to the excellent performances of both actors, Trnka’s original artistic design and the work of his favourite animators Stanislav Látal, Břetislav Pojar, Jan Karpaš and Josef Kluge, the film is an unforgettable spectacle.

Once Upon a Time, There Was a King…

Bořivoj Zeman | Czechoslovakia | 1954 | 98 min

Despite the imprints of Communist ideology in the film, the popularity of this timeless fairy tale doesn’t fade. Director Bořivoj Zeman adapted Božena Němcová’s story titled Salt Over Gold in his own way. He worked on the script with Jiří Brdečka (among others), but the resulting film and its message were significantly influenced by the extraordinary performances and situational comedy talent of Jan Werich and Vlasta Burian.
The story is set in a small kingdom ruled by King Myself, First (played by Werich), with his comical advisor named Etcetera (portrayed by Liberec native Burian). Even though the kingdom is small, the King would like to entrust it to someone else and retire. But he has three daughters and it’s not easy to pick one because he loves them all equally. He asks them how much they love him in order to select his successor. When his youngest daughter Maruška answers that she loves him as much as salt, the story takes an unexpected turn. The king is outraged and banishes Maruška. He also bans salt throughout the kingdom and while Maruška takes refuge in the forest, things in the kingdom are getting out of the king’s control.
The film’s graphic design was created by none other than Jiří Trnka and Vladimír Novotný was in charge of its special effects. In addition to Werich and Burian, the film stars many other excellent actors such as Lubomír Lipský and Miloš Kopecký.

Drown Out the World with Laughter

různí / various | 75 min

There are often situations we can’t control in life. The possibilities for an ordinary person to react are limited. Paradoxically, one effective psychological defence is joy. Even in the most terrifying moments, humanity has been able to laugh at its fate and animators have been proving this for decades.

This paradox is most noticeable in anti-war films. During the Second World War, laughter, or perhaps ridicule, was used as a weapon. In the United States, it was Donald Duck who fought against the Nazis, in Prague it was the Springman. A more cunning strategy (i.e. ignoring everything) was used by the heroes of the Cold War in a brilliant piece by the National Film Board.

Military conflicts often trigger migration and it’s often hard to deal with the consequences thereof without losing one’s detached view. But there are naturally many problems that need to be properly ridiculed. Sometimes, you just live in the wrong place (at the end of the world, in the wrong country etc.) or you’re just trying to take a nice picture. In this case, relief from the senselessness of the world, from its small-mindedness and dullness can be provided only by Dadaism from the Pythonesquely subversive Terry Gilliam.

Eastern Promises: Ukraine

64 min

Eastern Promises is a new section of Anifilm, mapping the remarkable work created on Europe’s eastern borders. For obvious reasons, this year’s first stop explores Ukrainian animation. In the last seven years or so, Ukrainian filmmakers have started to appear increasingly often in the selections of prestigious festivals. They are also successful online as in addition to films, they often focus on gif art, jingles, music videos etc.

One of the most prominent representatives of this trend is our juror, Stas Santimov. This programme includes every music video and film he has ever made. When compared to others from the new generation of Ukrainian animators, his vision is probably the darkest, underscored by his passion for morbid and macabre sceneries. When his nightmares come to life, there’s naturally not much space for light colours and shades. But they have a place in the work of most of his peers, such as Oksana Kurmat and Mykyta Lyskov. Thanks to his masterpiece Deep Love, which has gained a new life in recent months thanks to its clear political undertones, he has become the standard bearer of new Ukrainian animation. One important figure, who has based her style on striking colours and wacky character stylisation, is US-based Nata Metlukh. She revels in bizarre and absurd situations distortedly reflecting our society. The biggest festivals have been screening her films for years (two of her films are competing in this year’s Anifilm competition). Anna Dudko, meanwhile, inclines to the use of nature motifs. Her older film and several films by other Ukrainian authors are included in our block for children. Slava Ukraini!

The slapstick comedy Long Live the Little Mouse, combining hand-drawn animation with live action, is one of Pavel Koutský’s earlier works. He portrays the age-old rivalry between cat and mouse in his typical original style. In this case it means that the film is a humorous parable of human hypocrisy.

Looney Tunes: Variations & Influences

různí / various | United States | 83 min

Bugs Bunny was partly inspired by a rabbit from Disney’s The Tortoise and the Hare, because all Hollywood cartoons were influenced by Disney. But when Bugs appears in a cartoon based on the same fable, it is more cynical and violent than Disney ever was.

Directors at Warner Bros. had more influence over their cartoons than Disney allowed. Bob Clampett’s A Gruesome Twosome and Friz Freleng’s Putty Tat Trouble created very different cartoons with the same writer, Warren Foster, and the same story of two cats trying to catch Tweety.

Other studios tried to copy Looney Tunes. Voice actor Mel Blanc and director Frank Tashlin made one of the best imitations, The Fox and the Grapes, whose story of repeated failure was itself copied by Warner Bros. in the Road Runner series.

Even United Productions of America, which made Warner Bros. look old-fashioned with ambitious films like Rooty Toot Toot, was influenced by the stylised movement and period flavour of Chuck Jones’s The Dover Boys.

Finally, three different approaches to Daffy Duck: An antagonist in You Ought to Be in Pictures, a World War II hero in Plane Daffy, and in Duck Amuck, a cinema everyman tormented by his creator.

Fairy-Tale Parodies

různí / various | 65 min

Fairy-tales are excellent source material for parodies in every art form. Not even animated films, which automatically equal fairy-tales in the eyes of many, could miss out on the opportunity to revise fairy-tale motifs. It’s actually an immensely popular pastime enjoyed by new as well as established directors. The first example in our programme is from the 1930s and fairy-tales still weren’t spared.

They’re full of allegories and many serious analyses try to interpret them. They often invite filmmakers to desecrate them. Subliminal, brutal and often sexual motifs hidden in fairy-tales provoke filmmakers, who – in a spirit of postmodernism – use these very motifs in their reinterpretations. Sometimes, with notorious stories, they just increase the pace, other times they play with colours and Little Red Riding Hood becomes a murderous monster or at least a karate master. How would fairy-tale characters end up if they grew old? Not even this is taboo for animators. As we’re in animation and the magical world of fairy-tales, black humour can always get blacker.

The fount of material to be ridiculed will not dry up as there are still plenty of ‘serious’ animated fairy-tales and animators from ‘the other side’ are already sharpening their teeth. One thing is for sure – it won't be pretty. A fairy-tale can turn into horror with a wave of a magic wand.

Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires

Mike Mort | United Kingdom | 2018 | 89 min | EN

Forget Chuck Norris, here comes Chuck Steel! The best cop to ever walk the goddamned planet! Chuck Steel is a fearless, no-nonsense hero taken right from 1980s B-movies and series (and C-movies, or any other letter of the alphabet, for that matter). Chuck has everything that a proper ‘80s cop needs – big muscles, a big mouth, big guns (lots of them), an uncompromising attitude and major trauma. A year ago, he lost his wife. But like his boss says: ‘1985 is over, this is 1986!’ And in 1986, there’s no time for sentimentality. Chuck and his constantly dying partners have to get to the root of something very strange. The city is swarming with peculiar deaths and injuries. The hospital, for instance, accepts a woman slowly turning into a revolting creature of the night – something between a boozer and a vampire. Although the danger of vampires decimating the drunken population of the city seems at first to be the utter poppycock of an ancient geezer – a monster hunter – Chuck is eventually forced to admit that something strange is going on. Will he manage to save the world from the legacy of Transylvanian vampires who have been pushed to the edge of the society, hoping for a triumphant return to power led by their master? Or will he end up sucked dry, like a cheap wine box? This wild ride will chew up every film cliché and scheme and please viewers with an obvious passion for film oddities.

Sing 2

Garth Jennings | United States | 2021 | 110 min | ZDARMA / Free Entry

Anyone who wants to make it in show business must perform in Redshore City, the entertainment capital. But the city is controlled by a ruthless wolf named Jimmy Crystal and without his permission, you can’t even open your mouth in the city, let alone sing. Although the koala Buster Moon puts together a team of star singers (the porcupine punk rocker Ash, the timid elephant Meena, the sensitive gorilla John and the cheeky pig Gunter), it’s almost certain that an audition with Jimmy Crystal will end in total disaster. Buster takes a huge risk (something that worked for him repeatedly in the first film) and promises the bored Crystal that if he lets them perform a show in his city, Buster will cast the biggest music legend alive, the lion Clay Calloway. The trouble is that Calloway retired years ago and refuses to perform, and most likely, the last person who could convince him to do so is an annoying koala. But Buster believes that every dream comes at a price and is willing to do whatever it takes for his dreams to come true.

Jiřina Pěčová for Children

různí / various | Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic | 51 min

Throughout her career, editor Jiřina Pěčová, the recipient of this year’s Anifilm Lifetime Achievement Award, has focused primarily on animated films for children. She has worked on many popular classic Czech (and Czechoslovak) Bedtime Stories. This programme presents a selection of several episodes of various Bedtime Stories complemented by the short film Kitchen Tales. You will find out how the Top-Hat Rabbits skate, how Firefly was born, how Amelia the Forest Sprite reversed a brook and how Sophie became a zoo manager.

Kitchen Tales is a short puppet film made by Vojtěch Domlátil, a graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. In this original fairy-tale the kitchen of a forgetful grandma comes to life. Saltshaker, Sugarbowl and the rest are set to fix what she’s accidentally forgotten while the sulky rapper Tartar hides in the fridge.

Shrek

Vicky Jenson, Andrew Adamson | United States | 2001 | 90 min

It’s been more than 20 years since the phenomenal film Shrek stormed cinemas and, with the dauntlessness of an ogre, began blazing the trail for other 3D computer-animated films. This method soon prevailed in the sphere of animated blockbusters and the world has been seeing more and more of them ever since. The trend was present even before Shrek, but the unprecedented success of this family comedy asserted the dominance of 3D features and played a historic role. Technology has advanced significantly since then, so experts and fans of 3D animation may find Shrek a bit obsolete in this regard. Its original story with specific humour, however, hasn’t lost its charm and still makes Shrek a modern and timeless fairy-tale.
Together with his friend, the blabby Donkey, the film’s protagonist Shrek, a reclusive green monster living in a humble abode in a swamp, searches for Princess Fiona. The ogre, however, isn’t interested in the princess herself – at least not from the very beginning. In return for saving her, Shrek wants to get his beloved swamp back from Lord Farquaad.
The film treats classic fairy-tale stereotypes in a very original manner. The princess is beautiful, but also wild and daring, her saviour Shrek is miles away from being a typical prince (he even seems to be an anti-hero), the kingdom is ruled by a shrimpy lord. This iconic film about the importance of accepting your true self is full of parodic and ironic elements. The original voice cast includes Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz.

There’s Nothing You Can Do

různí / various | 70 min

Whether the protagonists are people, birds, scorpions, little kitties, polar bears or Bambi, this block of short films will show you that the number of limbs is of no consequence. We all share something that we humans often forget and that usually manifests itself in the most absurd situations possible. These can include a calm session on an electric line disrupted by a guileless bird flying by in the Oscar-winning film For the Birds or moments of desperation when one is trying to quit smoking according to instructions by Bill Plympton. Also birthday celebrations, just like Bob’s celebration in the classic film by Alison Snowden and David Fine, or receiving a gift in the form of an adorable kitten capable of driving the recipient crazy. Even the improbable friendship between Boston and Chester by Grant Kolton counts, just like a clash with the ‘success at all costs’ culture in Marion Ichard’s tile shop. The pressing presence of what we share can also be felt in telephone conversations by Thomas Kneffel and the everydayness of Yes-People from Iceland. The inhabitants of a British zoo (voiced by real people describing their homes) interviewed in Aardman Animations’ brilliant mockumentary also know what it’s about. If you still don’t know what we’re talking about, perhaps you’ll find a clue in Bambi Meets Godzilla or in an account of a wedding by Joanna Quinn. Still in the dark? We’re talking about… life. You probably expected something more, right? Tough luck. There’s nothing you can do.

Ilja Novák, the Rebel from Ostrava

Ilja Novák | Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic | 56 min

The most prominent personality of Studio Prometheus, the Ostrava branch of Krátký Film Studio, was graphic artist and director Ilja Novák. This year’s festival theme of Animation & Humour represents an ideal opportunity to screen his films. Almost all of them aim to make the viewers laugh. But, as is typical for Czech animation, they’re not straightforward slapstick. In addition to using ubiquitous irony, Novák’s films move along two often intersecting lines. The first represents black humour, as we can see in Merry Christmas, or Charlie’s Winter Adventure. The second represents satire, very concrete and biting for its time. Perfect examples are His Excellency and What is Your Opinion, Baron?, a film which was heavily censored. In addition to harsh criticism, Novák’s films stand out from the rest of domestic production thanks to their artistic expression. Although very different in stylisation, in some moments Novák’s films are reminiscent of animation used by Igor Ševčík and Pavel Koutský. Novák doesn’t work in one layer, but his movements and editing using image transformations are typical for total animation. To re-introduce the slightly forgotten work of the Ostrava native, we will screen Kanga, Roo and Dingo the Dog and a wacky series ignored by television channels, Lux and Delux.

Looney Tunes: Departments

různí / various | United States | 71 min

Each cartoon in this programme highlights an aspect of animated filmmaking. But first, Porky’s Preview shows what cartoons would be like with an amateur in charge of all departments.

Director Friz Freleng, a master of animation timing, gets laughs in Little Red Riding Rabbit just by having Bugs Bunny open doors in synchronisation with music. Music is even more important in Mouse-Warming, where Carl Stalling’s song quotations convey the emotions of silent characters.

Frank Tashlin shows off his mastery of camera angles in Porky Pig’s Feat, and in Claws for Alarm, backgrounds designed by Maurice Noble enhance comedy and horror.

In Draftee Daffy, notice how different Daffy looks and moves depending on which animator is drawing him. Russian Rhapsody showcases character design, with dozens of unique gremlins based on the Warner Bros. studio staff, and the avant-garde Now Hear This is a showcase for sound designer Treg Brown.

Tedd Pierce shows in High Diving Hare that a writer can spin endless variations on the same basic joke. Last but not least, voice actor Mel Blanc voices four completely distinct characters in the very first Foghorn Leghorn cartoon.

I Married a Strange Person!

Bill Plympton | United States | 1997 | 75 min

Although I Married a Strange Person! is one of Bill Plympton’s early films, it bears his trademark artistic and narration style. As in most of his later films, Plympton focuses on the relationship and sexual tension between a man and a woman and the bizarre situations in everyday life. It is a laborious and ambitious project which the author, as is his custom, carried out with attention to the strangest details and subversive humour using specific, lively and superbly shaded drawing.
It’s a heartwarming story of a newlywed couple on their wedding night. Grant, the husband, starts experiencing strange, supernatural powers and Kerry, his wife, can’t cope. Whenever Grant thinks of something, it becomes reality, yet he doesn’t know where these magical powers come from. Once again Bill Plympton single-handedly drew and financed an animated feature extravaganza – only this time for adults and the politically incorrect.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Trey Parker | United States | 1999 | 78 min

Kyle, Kenny, Cartman and Stan, a beloved and condemned group of boys from an elementary school in a small redneck town in America, have a problem. They want to see the latest film by their favourite Canadian comedians Terrance and Phillip, but the film is R-rated. But that’s actually not the problem, as they do manage to see it. The problem is that the film teaches them the most vulgar swearwords the inhabitants of South Park can imagine. And children can’t be permitted to swear! American parents are outraged and a war breaks out between the US and Canada. The boys set out on a rescue mission. But freeing Terrance and Phillip from captivity won’t be easy. The boys must face their bigoted parents (led by the Mothers Against Canada movement, formed by Kyle’s mum), but Satan also gets a word in, as he sees the international conflict as a fulfilled prophecy of the Apocalypse and an opportunity to seize power over the world. But to his misfortune, he gets together with the constantly horny Saddam Hussein, so it won’t be easy for him either. As is customary, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut offends everyone and even ridicules itself. But it makes no bones about various social issues of (more than) American society and almost paradoxically ends with a (hopefully serious!) message of love and respect. Oh, and they kill Kenny. Bastards.

2022 Oscar-Nominated Animated Shorts

různí /various | 93 min

The 2021 Oscar nominations encompassed a varied selection of genres and animation and artistic techniques. In this showcase, we will see Joanna Quinn’s eccentric animated hero Beryl, an ageing factory worker obsessed with drawing. The Chilean puppet film Bestia couldn’t be farther from comedy. The film is inspired by real events and tells the story of a secret police agent, her twisted inner world and the circumstances of the society she lives in. The story of Boxballet focuses on two protagonists and the different worlds of the ballerina Olya and the boxer Evgenyi, who have to cope with their feelings in a harsh reality. Another film (this one for children) was made by the famous studio Aardman Animations and portrays a story of great courage and exploration. The protagonist, a bird named Robin who was brought up by mice, sets out to find her roots and herself. The last Oscar-nominated film, Windshield Wiper, stars a meditative hero. Sitting in a café with a cigarette in his hand, he ponders an important and timeless question: ‘What is love?‘. Our block of Oscar-nominated films was put together in collaboration with iShorts.

Midnight Animation: Midnight Humour

68 min

Midnight films frequently offer various kinds of humour. No wonder. Humour, although perhaps a little twisted, is an inseparable part of films for shock-proof audiences. Putting aside pure horrors, humour is present in all midnight shorts and is often extreme, properly wacky and duly racy.

You will not be spared when you watch this programme. We begin with a quirky debut by the phenomenal destructor of 3D, David O’Reilly. A get-together by the fire will quickly turn morbid in Timber. Matouš Valchář and his puppet Xmas Story about Saleswoman will introduce some unrefined punk style. You can enjoy disgusting absurdities in Ice Cream, The Tongueling and BAKA!! rivalling the frantically loony films Hot Dog Hands and Roommates. Czech authors are represented in the programme by the parody Hurray for the Princess!!!, a series of morbid situations in Chrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and the iconic horror parody Bloody Merry Christmas.

Mimi and Lisa – The Garden

Katarína Kerekesová, Ivana Šebestová | Slovakia, Czech Republic | 2022 | 65 min

A new feature film with the popular Slovak animated characters! The film, with a clear environmental message, starring Lisa and the blind Mimi has only recently entered distribution.
Mimi and Lisa are best friends. One of them is blind, but that doesn’t affect their friendship in any way; on the contrary. They teach each other generosity, tolerance and openness. A yellow container appears in their yard and the neighbours soon start filling it with old and broken things. Lisa is curious about what Mimi will throw out and is surprised when her friend doesn’t get rid of anything. For Mimi, all old things represent fixed points and little certainties in the dark. Behind the container, the girls discover a secret door leading to the beautiful garden of the miraculous Magic Maker. However, this idyllic world is disrupted when all the things thrown away in the container form a giant monster that starts ravaging the garden. It even swallows the Magic Maker whole!
Mimi and Lisa decide to save the garden and the Magic Maker. The girls find out that even material things have to be approached with love and respect and that every object has its purpose. The film has a clear message: it’s time to realise one’s responsibility towards the world and start to actively reshape it.

Even Mice Belong in Heaven

Denisa Grimmová, Jan Bubeníček | Czech Republic, France, Poland, Slovakia | 2021 | 87 min | UK | EN sub

The story behind the film Even Mice Belong in Heaven began in 2010 when director and graphic artist Denisa Grimmová came up with the idea to adapt Iva Procházková’s successful book into a puppet film. Its originality lies, among other things, in its approach to death, which the author can present to children with ease and playfulness.

The creative team approached the book with great ambitions, screenwriters added plotlines and characters and this Czech production became a co-production between four countries. After almost ten years of preparation, development, filming and post-production, viewers can look forward to a thrilling adventure set predominantly in the afterlife. Two animals, considered by their close friends to be weirdoes and outsiders, Quickfeet the mouse and Whitebelly the fox, have an accident and run into each other in animal heaven. Despite being arch-enemies in life, together they set out on a journey to overcome old sorrows, find a new beginning and develop an eternal friendship. The film offers not only an original story full of intense emotions but also an unforgettable spectacle enhanced by the puppet design, decorations, setting and meticulous animation.

Superhero Adventures

různí / various | 52 min

In addition to the programme block The Adventures of Mischievous Animals put together for younger children, Anifilm has created a block for older children composed of foreign adventurous series with action heroes or perhaps even superheroes. These series are modern and progressive, and Czech Television has recently started broadcasting them. The graphic artist of the quirky French series Sardine in Outer Space is the renowned comics artist Joann Sfar. The series is an adaptation of his comics (previously, his successful comic books The Rabi’s Cat and Little Vampire were adapted into feature films). The block also includes single episodes from the action-packed, thrilling and artistically inventive series The Minimighty Kids and Moka’s Fabulous Adventures. The first one teaches you how to love yourself and the second recounts the adventures of a crocodile prince, the future ruler of the savannah.

Chicken of the Mound

Xi Chen | China | 2021 | 84 min | EN

One day, a Jellyfish breaks into one of the robot earths. The Jellyfish branched into several events, one of these events was called Chicken. After the Chicken event deactivated the local robot defence system, it began scanning local stories and creating new stories. The stories created by Chicken consisted of sub-stories and mini-dramas. A particularly curious larva chicken did not undergo adult transformation and did not hide in the cave. Instead, it experienced several small growths and roamed the plains and mounds in robot armour.

The author of the formally most extreme film of recent times is the young and versatile Chinese artist Xi Chen, who made the film all by himself. Right from the very first second, the exposition hurls us into a strange world of an eternal fight only to subsequently add layers of scenes in a not very viewer-friendly mode. This frenetic experimental film, occasionally reminiscent of gameplay videos, smoothly uses 3D animation and combines it with real footage. The film was screened at festivals in Ottawa and Annecy and this unusual experience is now brought to you by Anifilm.

Eternal Spring

Jason Loftus | Canada | 2022 | 86 min | ZH | EN, CS sub

In March 2002, several members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement decided to counter the Chinese government’s false reports vilifying the group. In Changchung city, they managed to hack the broadcast of the Chinese state TV and for several brief moments, the viewers could see what Falun Gong truly stood for. Consequently, the police started cruelly pursuing the members of the small resistance group as well as their supporters. Comic book illustrator Daxiong, a Falung Gong practitioner, was forced to flee the city. He himself thought that hacking the broadcast was counterproductive as it only worsened the situation. In North America, he met the lone surviving participant to have escaped China. Their dialogue revealing other circumstances, details and the fates of individual participants forms the backbone of this ani-doc. Its authors combine live footage with animated sequences inspired by Daxiong’s work and map the fight for freedom of expression and religion in a captivating way. The authors of this documentary felt the pressure of the Chinese government themselves when government officials contacted their colleagues and tried to persuade them to cease cooperation.

Corner

Lucija Mrzljak | Estonia | 2016 | 3 min

This visually minimalistic short film in the best tradition of Estonian humour deals with the hardships of life in a corner where two angles meet. Existence seems very hard here – the laws of perspective and gravity play strange games so the whole image becomes geometrically relative and the characters lose their ground.

People are waiting for someone special. Someone special is born – a grown-up man in a suit. They follow the man and cheer his theatrical but utterly pointless performances. In the middle of one performance he makes a mistake and the people who have so far adored him, leave. Left alone, he meets a woman who is made for him. The theatrical performances continue.

Lucija Mrzljak eventually settled in Tallinn, where she now works in the famous Eesti Joonisfilm studio. Inspired by the Estonian weakness for absurd situations and hard-to-grasp phenomena, which entirely organically become parts of the heroes’ everyday lives, and drawing with simple lines, she has made a captivating film about relationships and the longing for freedom.

Frank & Wendy

Kaspar Jancis, Ülo Pikkov, Priit Tender | Estonia | 2005 | 75 min

Leaving out Estonian animation when celebrating humour in animation would be strange, to say the least. Thanks to its peculiar humour, the work of Priit Pärn and his students has become a worldwide phenomenon. In the golden age of Estonian animation, the project Frank & Wendy became a symbol of generational kinship. Pärn’s script was adapted by representatives of the new generation – Kaspar Jancis, Ülo Pikkov and Priit Tender – into seven episodes which were later joined together into a feature film. A film which would, in this day and age, be seen as radical, grotesque and surreal, with humour that is not for everyone.
Two American secret agents – Frank and Wendy – are sent to the world’s hotbed of danger, known as Estonia. Frank and Wendy, for whom saving the world is just another day in the office, have sharp minds and excel in everything they do. It appears that nothing can prevent their ultimate victory. It doesn’t matter if they face wild challenges such as an army of Nazi gnomes, Communist seals, or even worse, real politicians.

One of Plympton’s early successes, Your Face is based on unbelievable metamorphoses of the human face. Guard Dog

Bill Plympton | United States | 2004 | 5 min

In addition to interpersonal relationships, Plympton’s animated films often focus on man’s best friend – the dog. In his rendition, though, these pets often don’t look or act like dogs anymore. Despite this, his first 'wacky' dog film, Guard Dog, was nominated for an Oscar.

Welcome to Siegheilkirchen

Marcus H. Rosenmüller, Santiago López Jover | Austria, Germany | 85 min | DE | EN, CS sub

The makers of this satiric film managed to transfer beer bellies, pig eyes, droopy faces, double chins and many other imperfections to the big screen with incredible believability. They were helped by iconic Austrian caricaturist Manfred Deix, whose work served as an inspiration for the film. We join his childhood alter ego in a small Austrian village in the 1960s where the locals would like to have everything in proper order. Woe betide anyone who would defy their extremely Catholic and far-right morale! The film’s young protagonist, son of the local innkeeper, would prefer to think (and, God forbid, perhaps even live) a little differently. His young eyes can see everything the adults contentedly ignore. He is unable to understand what others so loudly proclaim. The object of the boy’s desire, a girl named Mariolina, and his artistic talent eventually become the source of a public nuisance. We witness him fight for his life and the life of his chosen one with all the trouble that growing up in the horrendous town of Siegheilkirchen puts in their way.

For many Anifilm visitors, the series Lux and Delux, following the adventures of two not very capable astronauts, brought to us in the form of a news report from their home planet, Xylophonia, is a surprising discovery. Due to its Dadaist humour, ironic perspective and elaborate visual style, we could classify it as a predecessor of series like Adventure Time. The story was created by ‘Cimrmanologists’ Jiří Šebánek and Jaroslav Pacovský, graphic artist Petr Poš and director Ilja Novák, the famous rebel from Ostrava. The characters were voiced by František Filipovský and Luděk Sobota, among others. Songs by jazzman Karel Velebný are sung by Jana Kratochvílová as Galaxy Masox. The production of the series, comprising 13 episodes, started in 1983 but it was delayed because of various complications related to the communist era, including censor intervention. The production eventually took 9 years and the series premiered in 1992, after the Velvet Revolution. This block includes the first six episodes.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

Mark Osborne, Stephen Hillenburg | United States | 2004 | 87 min

The festival theme of Animation & Humour naturally has to take us deep underwater to Bikini Bottom. As a reminder of the legendary series created by Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon, we chose the first feature film based on the series. It was made 18 years ago, but its energy, humour and superb animation are still on point. It’s still great entertainment for multiple age groups and still the best feature version of the genius surrounding the tirelessly optimistic and workaholic yellow sea sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants. The film’s open-minded humour oscillates on the axis of infantile – Dada – extremely clever. And as a bonus, there is David Hasselhoff himself!

Trouble starts when Plankton enacts a plan to discredit his business nemesis Mr. Krabs, steal the Krabby Patty secret formula and take over the world by stealing King Neptune’s crown and framing Mr. Krabs for the crime. SpongeBob and Patrick team up to retrieve the crown from Shell City to save Mr. Krabs from Neptune’s wrath and their world from Plankton’s rule.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Steve Box, Nick Park | United Kingdom | 2005 | 85 min

The unforgettable heroes of this film – the absent-minded inventor Wallace and his exceptionally intelligent and caring dog Gromit – are known to stop-motion animation enthusiasts from a series of short films that have been made since the 1980s (Anifilm presents two of them – The Wrong Trousers and A Grand Day Out – in its programme for children). This comedic duo eventually ventured into the feature film format in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005. The film, created as a collaboration between DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Animations, offers great, intelligent and superbly animated entertainment for children and grown-ups alike. In distribution, it was accompanied with the tagline ‘something wicked this way hops’.
Wallace and Gromit’s hometown is getting ready for a giant vegetable competition. The hardworking growers are, however, tormented by rodents endangering their competition entries. Using their inventions, Wallace and Gromit do a fine job of protecting the veggies, but only until the moment when they have to face the result of an accident involving their other inventions: a were-rabbit. Will the veggies survive and will Wallace discover the true nature of the were-rabbit?
This thrilling yet humorous film is a masterful parody of classic horror films and other genres and will captivate viewers with superb claymation.

Foam Bath

György Kovásznai | Hungary | 1980 | 76 min

Some Hungarian animated films are lucky enough to be digitally restored. Viewers thus have a chance to see them again after several decades with proper visual quality and no faded colours. Two years ago, Anifilm screened the mesmerising film Son of the White Mare by the recently deceased Marcell Jankovics. This year, Anifilm visitors can again look forward to a Hungarian feature film, but this time, it will be a completely different spectacle.
The mysterious Foam Bath is balanced somewhere between an anti-romantic comedy and an obscure musical. One day, the dull life of lonely medical student Anna Parádi is interrupted by Zsolt Mohai, a tall, dark, hysterical shop window decorator, who begs her to phone his fiancée Klára and call off their impending wedding.
A series of discussions and musical (and dance) numbers follows, relativising loyalty, romance, partnerships and friendships in a juicy manner. The unusual spectacle is boosted by wild animation using rather ‘wacky’, but all the more original drawing.
In 1980, when the film premiered, it was said that a brand-new animation style had been born. An extraordinary, eccentric style not afraid of extremes. Director György Kovásznai made this unique film more than 40 years ago, but this Foam Bath hasn’t lost its fizz. See for yourselves at Anifilm!

Cheatin’

Bill Plympton | United States | 2013 | 76 min

This artistically distinct and ‘Plymptonesquely’ provocative film with typically shaky and expressive drawing is the seventh feature film by the independent American filmmaker. The film has been screened by many festivals worldwide and has won many awards – for instance at Annecy (Jury Prize), Bologna (Grand Prize), Montreal (Audience Award) and Anifilm when it was based in Třeboň.

Jake and Ella meet in a fateful bumper-car collision and become the most loving couple in the history of romance. But when a scheming ‘other’ woman drives a wedge of jealousy into their courtship, insecurity and hatred spell out an untimely fate. With only the help of a disgraced magician and his forbidden ‘soul machine’, Ella takes the form of Jake’s numerous lovers, fighting through dysfunction and deceit as they try to reclaim their destiny.
Bill Plympton personally drew over 40,000 frames in Cheatin’ and ran a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $100,000 to help finance the production. The film was released theatrically in the spring and summer of 2013.
