Animation Workshop

510 min

Animation workshops use an entertaining form to introduce the process of making animated films to children. Under the tutelage of experienced lecturers, children can make their own animated films from scratch – including writing the script and animating. In the process, they will use many artistic techniques including cut-out animation, traditional animation, computer animation, sand animation, claymation, pixilation and stop-motion animation.

Animation workshops take place in the Small Hall of the Lidové Sady Cultural Centre.

22 to 26 June from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

27 June from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm

In collaboration with the Liberec Regional Gallery, we also organise an animation workshop in their studio. It focuses mainly on artistic techniques, traditional and cut-out animation.

22 to 26 June from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

27 June from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Even Mice Belong to an Exhibition

Puppet feature film Even Mice Belong to Heaven follows the acclaimed tradition of Czech puppet animation and its makers are former students of Břetislav Pojar – experienced directors and graphic designers Denisa Grimmová and Jan Bubeníček. After several years, they managed to bring their vision to life and their spectacular film will have its Czech premiere
at this year’s Anifilm. The film with a distinct artistic style boasts superb animation and unique puppets and settings. Fantastic environments complement the remarkable realistic sceneries inspired by the stunning nature of the Central Bohemian Uplands and the area surrounding Litoměřice. The film’s decorations are often formed by real natural elements like parts of trees or moss. Many details of the film, whose artistic design was created by Denisa Grimmová, will remain hidden to the viewers at the first glance. Spacious decorations often appear in it for just a few minutes. But many decorations and complete scenes including puppets from the film were luckily preserved, and the film’s premiere will be accompanied by an extensive exhibition which will be open until the end of 2021. You will find it in the Garden Wing of the Liberec Chateau, which had been previously closed to the public.

Shapeable Visual Identity – Oz Animation

You will have noticed that the visual identity of this year’s Anifilm uses clay (for the first time in the festival’s history, as a matter of fact). Its authors, Eliška and Lee Oz, have prepared small but real demonstrations for the festival visitors – scraps of scenes that can be seen in their wild festival jingle. Not ones and zeros, but real physical matter animated by the hands of the Moravian-Israeli duo.

Naivní divadlo: Budulínek

45 min

The authors of the studio performance have held true to the well-known plot of this classic Czech fairy tale about Budulínek; however, they originally expanded it with many innovative motifs. In their rendition, the theme of obedience doesn’t extend only to the disobedient Budulínek and the oversensitive ears of the sly fox, but also to Budulínek’s grandparents, whose hearing is very poor. You will find out what’s behind this all in a charming studio performance full of humour, live music and exquisite puppetry.

The 45-minute performance is suitable for children above 4 years of age.

Floex

60 min

In his music, Tomáš Dvořák aka Floex creates a unique atmospheric universe, exploring the possibilities of the coexistence of the electronic and acoustic sound worlds. Strong emphasis is placed on natural musicality on one side and on a cutting-edge approach to electronic music production on the other. He has released two full-length albums, Pocustone (2001) and Zorya (2011) in addition to Gone EP (2014). His very exciting collaboration with Tom Hodge, the album A Portrait of John Doe creates a new level of synergy between classical music and radical “avant-garde” electronic. Today, he’ll play music from the game Machinarium.

Ufajr

60 min

For their music, the Prague-based band Ufajr draw inspiration from listening to their idols and watching Bedtime Stories. Ufajr have already performed twice at Anifilm – in 2015 they prepared a musical tribute to composer Petr Skoumal, whose melodies they adapted in math-rock rhythms, and in 2017, they accompanied the hallucinogenic videoart visions of Petr Skala with their post-rock sound (according to Skala himself, they ‘rocked’). This year, Ufajr’s performance will be purely musical. Their latest song with a running time of 12 minutes, titled ‘Už to vypadalo tak slibně’ (It Looked Promising) is inspired by Skala’s videoart. And maybe there’ll be time for those Bedtime Stories!

badfocus

60 min

badfocus is an emerging project of a Prague-based producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Prokop Korb. His music represents an abundant sonic fantasy powered by the endeavour to expand his own musical language. Despite coming originally from a jazz background, badfocus experiments with various genres such as electronica, classical music, hip-hop and indie pop. He released his first ep1 in the spring of 2020 and his debut album wallflower in September of the same year, which strives for genre ambivalence and atmospheric, ambient, yet catchy soundscapes.

Naivní divadlo: Kuba and Markyta + The Three Threadmakers

50 min

Kuba and Markyta

Using several puppets, actress Markéta Sýkorová illustrates the ridiculous behaviour of a stupid boy named Kuba who tries to follow his mother’s advice, but always messes things up. Kuba is to marry Markyta and bring her a present, but he misunderstands his mother’s advice and does something dumb again. This triggers a chain of advice and the nonsensical following of it, which is hilarious for children, as even the smallest child is cleverer than our Kuba.

The 25-minute performance is suitable for children above 3 years of age.

The Three Threadmakers

In addition to the legendary performance Kuba and Markyta, which has been in the repertoire of Naivní divadlo Liberec for more than 20 years, the troupe has introduced a new ‘Grimmesque’ fairy tale, The Three Threadmakers in 2010. In this piece, the dumb Kuba is replaced with a very lazy girl. The current performer of both pieces, Markéta Sýkorová has written a fairy-tale anecdote about laziness and promises unfulfilled (once again inspired by the Brothers Grimm).

The 25-minute performance is suitable for children above 3 years of age.

Hrtl

60 min

Leoš Hort, alias HRTL is a top performer on modular synthesizers, a founder of the Brno-based cassette record label Bükko Tapes and an active member of the famous Bastl Instruments collective, which creates hand-made open-source music hardware. HRTL’s music evolved from post-witch-house towards repetitive rhythms with rich melodic and sound elements, changing atmosphere and playful structures. Be it dirty house with an ‛80s feeling, fluorescent techno or dark, bubbly beats, HRTL never plays the same thing twice. This is because as well as his live performances, his recordings are improvised and built 100% on hardware synthesizers.
