LAJKA / A. Klimt

It is fascinating to see the ways in which man has raised himself above all other living beings on Earth, the way he decides over their life and death, and his godlike attitude to them, especially in the name of science. Many people know Laiku, but few know that the famous dog’s final hour of life began the moment her rocket took off. Nothing other than Sputnik had been developed at the time, and satellites don’t usually return to Earth. I decided to mix all this together into a crazy, fantastical story full of funny and almost absurd situations, because it is the only way of telling such a story with a sense of lightness and objectivity.

a feature-length animated puppet sci-fi musical

Time schedule: 2011–2014

Budget: 2 000 000 EUR

Aurel Klimt

Director, screenwriter, animator. Graduated from the department of animation at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), where he studied classical animation in Radek Pilař’s videoart studio and pixilation and puppet animation under Břetislav Pojar. During his studies, he garnered significant attention with his first films, and he began to appear at international festivals. He has received numerous important domestic and foreign awards, including a nomination for a student Oscar. Klimt works primarily on his own films, but has also worked on theatre performances, television spots, and advertising. On all his projects, he is responsible for the script, editing, animation, directing, and technology (scenography). He also usually writes the story and in some instances does art design. Klimt teaches animation at FAMU, and has been the head of the animation department since 2006.

Mona Peek is jarred by a delayed grief for her dead father when she finds out her childhood home has been sold. Her emotional plight becomes the subject of an esoteric card game played in another dimension by four animated dogs. When she returns to her back yard to disinter her father’s relic, a piece of bone she’d buried there, the game begins. Over the course of a problematic but magical weekend, the dogs’ mischief – stealing objects, whistling, impersonating humans – helps Mona to reconcile her loss and reconnect with her world.

Set Set Spike

A single mother’s personal ritual combines her history, poetry and a volleyball-inspired aerobic workout.

Emily Hubley

Filmmaker and animator. She has made short animated films for over thirty years and provided animation to television and films, including John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), Blue Vinyl (2002) and The Boy in the Bubble (2006). Her feature film The Toe Tactic (2008) was screened at numerous film festivals and premiered theatrically at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Emily is the daughter of animation pioneers John and Faith Hubley and worked at The Hubley Studio, Inc. on Faith’s films from 1977 to 2001.

Fired Up

Fired Up

Zoltán Horváth | Switzerland, France | 2010 | 9 min

The wax museum closes and tranquillity descends upon the hall with the Hollywood stars. It is a stark contrast to the previous pandemonium caused by the display of Marlon Brando’s motorcycles crashing to the floor. But this is, in fact, the calm before the storm. An homage to the rebellious, excessive actor.

Marcel Barelli | Switzerland, France | 2011 | 7 min

This animated documentary takes a satirical look at how the bearded vulture became extinct in the Swiss Alps because it was erroneously considered to be dangerous. Above all, however, the film teaches us a great deal about the distinct image of foreigners as portrayed in Swiss politics.

Carlo Ippolito | Switzerland | 2011 | 13 min

At the dawn of science, when it was still difficult to differentiate it from magic or astrology, Copernicus proposed placing the sun – and not the Earth – at the centre of the solar system. The film retells the story of the first subversive philosopher to consider the theories of Giordano Bruno de Nola. The Earth stopped being the centre of the universe!

The Master and Margarita / K. Lillqvist

The Master and Margarita / K. Lillqvist

Master and Margarita is a dark and surrealistic romance from the Moscow of the Thirties: an underground writer falls in love with a wife of a high general and ends up in the asylum – only to be liberated by devilish Doctor Woland and his burlesque gang.

Katariina Lillqvist, the creator of a very experimental, non- conformist and extraordinary project The Kafka-thrilogy (The Rider on the Bucket, The Chamber Stork, The Country Doctor), is going to present her most recent feature animation in progress, The Master and Margarita, based on the great novel of the same title by Mikhail Bulgakov. The first version of the script was released in May 2012.

Katariina Lillqvist

Film director, producer, writer and free-lance journalist who has been working over 20 years in Prague. She comes from a multicultural Finnish family with three different religions, so already in her childhood she was used to listen different opinions and keep her own voice clear. In her films and projects she has been dealing with hard issues like the fates of the children of Sarajevo, the position of the Roma minority in the changing Europe, vanishing of the traditional cultures and communities of small Northern tribes and the position of the girls and women in various authoritative subcultures and religious groups. Her numerous awards include the Silver Bear from the Berlinale 1996 for her film The Country Doctor.
