UPA Discussion Panel
“When I die, I don‘t want to go to heaven ... I want to go to UPA.”
Friz Freleng

This year marks 70 years since the founding of the legendary United Production of America, which was created towards the end of the Second World War by a group of disgruntled directors, artists, and animators from the Walt Disney Studios who refused to submit to the studio’s artistic templates and taboos. The conflict culminated in a strike and their subsequent departure. And so they established their own small studio, which promoted the concept of limited animation and the modern visual style of the 1950s. Their innovations were soon acknowledged and adopted by many other leading studios.

UPA changed the way we view modern animation – not only in its approach to animation itself, but primarily in our view of what animated film can and should be. The studio’s principles remain current today, and continue to inspire artists throughout the world.

The discussion panel brings together various artists and friends associated with UPA. Participants include Gene Deitch, one of the last living UPA directors and an Oscar recipient for Munro; Emily Hubley, daughter of UPA co- founder John Hubley; and many others. The discussion will be moderated by Amid Amidi, author of the award-winning Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in 1950s Animation, whose focus is on UPA.
