Czech Animation After '89

Exhibition Czech Animation After ‘89, prepared by Anifilm International Festival of Animated Films in collaboration with the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery, maps the last 30 years of Czech animation. After the revolutionary year 1989, a new era began in Czech cinema. And animation naturally went through a difficult period when production and distribution environment radically changed. But it also brought new creative possibilities and successes.
Czech Animation After ‘89 is the first exhibition recapitulating the last three decades in detail. It recounts the modern milestones of our animation in the form of feature films, successful television series and in particular short and student films. Apart from giving a comprehensive reflection, the exhibition aims to relativise the generally acknowledged notion of “the end of the golden era” and the claim that Czech animation hasn’t achieved any success during the last thirty years.

teepee

Music by teepee is a unique combination of dreampop and indie folk. The teepee sound is defined by acoustic guitar played by Mason and fragile notes of electric guitar, rendered by singing Tééra. You can also find traces of samples and synthetic sounds and experiments in their music. During its three-year-existence, the band became popular among fans and critics alike. Apart from participating in the musical export project Czeching 2018, they performed at festivals such as Waves Vienna and Nouvelle Prague. Last year, they released a single named Running Around made in collaboration with British produced Tom O. Marshall who is also working on their new album.

The Little Prince / Já to jsem (puppet theatre)

CS

“I’d like to tell you about the Little Prince. I’ve never talked about this encounter to anyone. Six years have already passed since my friend went away from me, with his sheep. If I try to describe him here, it is to make sure that I shall not forget him. To forget a friend is sad. And if I forget him, I may become like the grown-ups who are no longer interested in anything but figures.”

A one-man-theatre who on an old pram with puppets and music tells the story about his encounter with the Little Prince. A 50-minute-long performance suitable for children from 5 years of age.

Ghost of You

Five years of existence and more than 300 gigs and show times on the main European festivals, this is the current status of Brno-based band Ghost of You. After their successful debut album Glacier and The City in 2015, last year they released the new album Black Yoga combining their typical psychedelic moments with almost art-rock sound. Broken “epileptic” rhythmics accompanied by straight patterns, expressive guitars, elaborate synths and fragile vocals.

The Little Man / Divadlo b (puppet theatre)

CS

Just like the Little Man, you may discover that when you’re missing something, after wandering the world and fighting with monsters, you will find it nearby. Actually just round the corner.

This performance inspired by a puppet film of the same name was prepared by Divadlo b which was founded by former and current members of the Buchty and loutky theatre and their friends. Apart from the film, they drew inspiration also from the original book The Little Man’s Great Journey by Lenka Uhlířová and Jiří Stach.
The performance is 40 minutes long and is suitable for children from 3 years of age.

Limbo + Ventolin (live gaming)

A gaming session by Natálie Kratochvílová playing the game Limbo screened live on a wall will be accompanied by live music by Ventolin. It is a variation on the classical model of silent film (the game’s sounds are turned off and the game itself has a noir character) combined with sport and music. The gamer needs to overcome the obstacles of the games, the audiences cheer and Ventolin, as a musician, reacts to this interaction. The result is a unique film-sport performance with a considerable amount of improvisation.

Čáry života

In 2010, I began composing my first songs as Mirorr Karate. They were always slow and sad. Two years later, when we moved to Berlin with Fiordmoss, I founded Čáry života. Switching to Czech seemed to me as a step towards honesty and openness. Čáry are my diary and every song is about someone I know or met.

Stínítko recapitulates the last 6 years of my life. It is partly a “best of” compilation and partly a mix of other things. I recorded the songs myself on my computer in apartments where I used to live. Each of the recorded songs is a 150th version of itself. They vary both sound- and composition-wise depending on the time and place they were made. Stínítko may not be the most coherent album in the world, but it shows elements of time-lapse and reflects my development.

Katarzia

Katarzia is a Slovak producer, lyrics writer and singer living in Prague. Her clever lyrics are closer to rap, her band is somewhere between jazz and pop. Soft songs about human relationships have nuances of 90’s Slovak popular music, flirting with fragments of electronic synths, hip hop and cinematic atmosphere. Her discography includes three albums and in 2018, she won the Radiohead Award for her single Kde sa slzy berú from the the film Piata loď (Little Harbour). In collaboration with producer Pjoni, she composed award-winning music and lyrics to the performance of Antigona at the Slovak National Theatre.

Karel and Jaromír’s Fairy Tale / Ústav úžasu

Karel Jaromír Erben’s classic fairy tale The Apple Maiden as never seen before, told with phonograph records and other odds and ends. It's got everything it is supposed to: a brave prince, a beautiful princess under a spell and an old crone, who wants to have the prince to herself.
The performance is suitable for children from 4 years of age, lasts about 50 minutes and is interactive and almost participational.

Play Outside with Adriaan de Jongh

Come play the kinds of games you used to play when you were a kid! Or perhaps some folk games that are a little less active. Game designer Adriaan will lead the group to play various games that are still fun – or perhaps even more fun – now that we’re all serious and responsible adults.

To clarify: this session is primarily for grown-ups who think they’re too grown up to play physical games, but kids are obviously welcome to join as well!

Chuchel + DVA (live gaming)

Last March, Amanita Design released into the rocks of the world an outcry of a neurotic fluff ball named Chuchel and his bald helper/rival Kekel who repeatedly try to get at least to the cherry stalk in a grotesque game. But the more we want something, the likelier it is that we lose it. Echoes came back very soon and so Chuchel, apart from excited reviews, got a “game Oscar” from the Independent Games Festival. The game will be played live by its author himself, Jaromír Plachý, who will be accompanied by the band DVA (who made the game’s soundtrack) in its so far most synthesizered form. “It’s just adowable” says Martin Macháček from Radio Wave when describing the game.

Dukla

Dukla is a Prague-based band playing guitar pop with Czech lyrics. So far, Lukáš Vydra and Josef Hradílek have released two albums – Vinohrady and Život perfektní. Nostalgically-romantic naïve lyrics resonate with the band’s melancholic sound and the performance of both musicians is honest.
