Game Worlds: Another Level of Czech Animation

Anifilm International Festival of Animated Films has for a long time been focusing on artistically exceptional animation projects. And therefore it naturally closely observes artistic ventures reaching beyond fi lms to games. This evolution can certainly not be ignored as it radically destroys yet another barrier and produces specific situations. Czech animation thus expands into a new medium which creates new presentation opportunities and brings more freedom for authors. Thanks to the unique approach of graphic artists and ambitious game studios, we now witness their world-scale success and
our exhibition enables us to fully immerse ourselves in new game worlds.
Alongside with the trailers for games, two documentaries – DevQuest – Episode 1: The Hard Way and New Game (dir. Aleš Brunclík) – will be screened as part of the exhibition.

ČEZ - School of Animation

ČEZ SCHOOL OF ANIMATION organized by OSPAF uses an entertaining form to introdukce the process of animated film production to children. This year, the films will refl ect energy production, be it green renewable energy, nuclear energy or any other kind of energy. Under the supervision of lecturers, children will go through the entire process and make their very own animated films from script to the final animation. They will use various artistic techniques such as cutout animation, drawing, sand animation, pixilation and possibly also the demanding technique of puppet animation. The films made in the ČEZ SCHOOL OF ANIMATION will be evaluated by a jury which will select three of the best. They will be presented and awarded at the closing ceremony of the ANIFILM international Festival of Animated Films on Saturday 6th May in Třeboň. The author of the best film can look forward to a prize donated by ČEZ – an electric car for the weekend and other prizes by the company.

ČEZ SCHOOL OF ANIMATION will take place on the 1st floor of KCC Roháč from 1st to 6th M

No longer a kid, Prague-based producer Aid Kid (Ondra Mikula) is a rising star of the Czech electronic music scene. His sophisticated approach to dance music is the reason why he attracts the attention of both fans and critics who are drawing comparison to artists such as Jon Hopkins or Apparat. Aid Kid's eponymous debut album from 2015 was hailed as a Czech electronic music masterpiece. He won the popular vote at the Czeching 2015 Awards and was awarded Newcomer of the Year at the 2015 Vinyla Awards. As a composer, he worked on a number of spots, jingles, installations and videomapping projects.

Isama Zing is the new club project of producer and DJ Jonatán Pastirčák (Pjoni) who is also a member of the Mäss collective. His music reflects the diversity of interlinked genres of contemporary electronic music. His combination of modulated field recordings with industrial beats and fragile melodies indirectly illustrates the lingering tones of civilizational mechanicity which in his music organically disconnects, reconnects and forms songs.

The Maggie’s Marshmallows

60 min

This three-piece band from Prague grew up on the 80s garage punk bands such as Gories and Gruesomes and American garage bands of the late 60s. Their music gradually absorbed also inspirations from other genres, but their soft spot for old guitars and sixties sound hasn’t disappeared. In 2014, the band signed with American label Get Hip Recording, which published their first single Come Along and two years later also their debut album produced by Jim Diamond.

Lazer Viking

60 min

The fifth horseman of the apocalypse and the last true anti-hero, a mythical monster and a living legend at the same time – Lazer Viking is a one-man army on a quest to turn every filthy club, every forgotten community centre in the countryside and every garage into the Mecca of Rock’n’Roll. This prophet of electric guitar tyranny, this apostle of future hitmaking and a serial killer of stale trends knows only one speed – breakneck. Lazer Viking is everything you ever wanted but didn’t have the guts to ask for. Love him or hate him, but accept the cruel reality that you can’t live without him.

Kalle

60 min

Three years after their Anděl-winning debut album Live from the Room, the supporting band of such acts as Scott McCloud, Boduf Songs and Scott Kelly returns with their second album Saffron Hills. The band always uses their own tested methods and means of expression underlining the specific and intimate atmosphere of their songs. Intensifying layered guitars gives Kalle a considerable post-rock intensity, while their slowcore repetitiveness keeps their music on the ground and gives space to their singer Veronika whose vocals often add pop catchiness.

Xavier Baumaxa

60 min

Xavier Baumaxa is a regional hayseed with growing geographical and intergenerational appeal. He composes his songs while practicing rhythmical exercises like chopping wood, nailing long nails, hundreds of hours painting fences with thixotropic glazing, illegal drainage digging, crossing the broken line on the highway at nights, teeth chattering after crossing the double solid line in the mornings and last but not least also listening to crackling wood in the fireplace which is not rhythmical anyway and so it’s debatable…

Jimmy Pé

Jimmy Pé won’t mind calling himself a broken beat explorer. His cut-up electronica is slowly but successfully finding its way to worldwide audience. Production-wise, this Slovak producer can jump in to various music territories without failing to keep his own signature sound which main ingredients are broken rhythms spiced up by characteristic leaps between melancholy and euphoria.

Jimmy Pé is also a co-founder of GERGAZ label where he releases most of his music. His tunes already managed to caught The Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Baauer, Tokimonsta, UZ, Lefto, Daedelus, Dj Craze, Eskei83’s and Red Bull DJ contest winner Thre3style attention and others.

Role

60 min

ROLE is a four-piece band from Karlín or God knows where, a 90s copy band because they play guitars and a band that sounds like Priessnitz and Lucie because they sing in Czech. Their album RÁNA is offered for free because these days people buy only vinyl and no one from the band has a gramophone. But their hits will keep you dancing all night long!

Cold Cold Nights

60 min

Cold Cold Nights released their first album (The) Last Summer in March 2017. The debut of the band formed around Jakub Jirásek tells the stories of lonely millennials struggling with traditional concepts of gender roles, nationality and long-distance relationships. Apart from the usual instruments, the band uses wind instruments, an accordion and chimes. Their rich sound is carefully arranged into songs with an intimate atmosphere and a varied dynamic range. The style of Cold Cold Nights oscillates somewhere between post rock, indie and emo.

Unizone crew

The Unizone crew was founded at the beginning of 2017 by UNKNXWN and notsureyet. These two lovers of different variants of dance music were joined by Kewu a year later. In a dark corner of the Prague scene they formed a mutated amorphous club virus with a genome encoded with years of experience, technical skill with DJ decks, the boldness to destroy genre clichés and an incurable enthusiasm stemming from an endless cycle of searching for and finding new sounds and aesthetics.
