Ghost Cat Anzu
16.00, Pavilon I
This charming film about the search for one’s place in the world and ties with one’s surroundings and loved ones is an adaptation of the manga of the same name by Takashi Imashiro.
Tetsuya isn’t what you would call a dependable parent and a responsible adult, so his daughter Karin isn’t very pleased when Tetsuya goes to Tokyo in order to repay his debts and leaves her with her grandfather, who lives at a temple in the countryside. For an 11-year-old girl, this place is as boring as it gets, even though the people here are a bit strange. One of them, Anzu, a cat who rides a moped and works part-time as a chiropractor, is asked by Karin’s grandfather to watch over her.
The Cathedral of New Emotions
22.00, Pavilon I
German director Helmut Herbst’s utterly insane The Cathedral of New Emotions is, at least according to some experts, one of the most surreal, psychedelic and truly cosmic animated features ever made. This film rarity, unknown to most cinemagoers, follows a commune of Berlin stoners and intellectuals who are set adrift in space in 1972 in a packing container clutched in a giant flying hand. Various space flotsam smashes into the windshield while the hypnotic Krautrock drones in the background moaning ‘Where am I?’ and a naked man bounces up and down off a massive red pepper. So begins our descent down the psychotic rabbit hole.
