When the Wind Blows
11.00, Malé divadlo
This remarkable adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ graphic novel of the same name tells the story of Jim and Hilda, an elderly couple whose ordinary and settled lives are disrupted by a nuclear war. When the Wind Blows may seem civil and inconspicuous, but it’s a very authentic and depressing depiction of the feeling of hopelessness an individual has in the face of an armed conflict, and the transformation of a somewhat banal life into sheer horror with no means of escape. At the same time, When the Wind Blows seems to be a story about love, kindness, understanding and hope and the spine-chilling moments are sometimes lightened by humorous scenes without downplaying the film’s powerful message. It’s strengthened by the score composed by Roger Waters; the titular song was written and performed by David Bowie.
Fantastic Planet – screening & discussion
13.00, Malé Theatre
René Laloux’s first feature film won the Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival and took the world of animation by storm. The director was inspired by a novel by French writer Stefan Wul and he co-wrote the film with Rolan Topor, who also served as the film’s designer. Thanks to Topor, the film has a distinct surreal style and even after more than 50 years since its premiere, its atmosphere is still mesmerising. Despite the technical difficulties the crew encountered during production – it took four years to finish the film – they managed to implement a daring artistic style into a narrative sci-fi with a humanist message.
