Mutanti Hledaj Východisko: Andělé přileťte pro mě

Josef Lepša | Czech Republic | 2016 | 5 min

In a smooth single-take ride, the author takes us all the way from the underground to heaven through a modern industrial building. Mutanti hledaj východisko’s music video may have a slower tempo, but its atmosphere is all the more deep and intense. And that makes it a perfect addition to the lyrics.

Charles X: Can You Do It?

Quentin Baillieux | France | 2016 | 3 min

This clip is a beautiful merging of the typically highbrow sport of horse racing with the commonly misrepresented “mean streets” of Pacoima, the proud birthplace of Charles X. It challenges any stereotypes or preconceptions of race and social class which may exist in modern day society.

El Toto Café: Ginger Beer

Macchia Ornella, Medard Simon | Belgium | 2016 | 3 min

This abstract and largely hand-drawn choreography is a tribute to classical animation and also to ginger beer. Every particle and shape dances on real paper, appears, disappears and metamorphoses. We slowly come to the conclusion that these shapes brought to life by crayons and colours are actually the ingredients of the popular beverage.

DVA: Vespering

Jaromír Plachý | Czech Republic | 2016 | 3 min

It can be safely said that Jaromír Plachý is a specialist in making music videos for DVA. After his successful music videos for Nunovó tango (2009) and Mulatu (2014), he made an animated music video for Vespering. The film depicting a little boy’s dream once again shows the director’s artistic symbiosis of the grotesque with a slight horror-like deformity and the musical style of the popular Czech duo.

Lenka Mišincová’s and Radovan Marček’s music video is a perfect example of a combination of techniques with the predominant one being hand animation of cut-outs from newspapers. Through images and animation, the authors are trying to convey one particular message: however objective the media may seem, perception of individual pieces of information will always be subjective and depend on the reader’s interpretation.

The society that the authors have focused on is Japan right after it was hit by a massive earthquake five years ago. This animation was produced as overlapping situations that are condensed into an increase in social crime, political instability and serious environmental problems. These are, in a sense, Japanese social near-death experiences.

Balcony

David Dell’Edera | Hungary | 2016 | 7 min

Balcony begins very inconspicuously – we see a lazy afternoon at a housing estate. Children are playing football and people are hiding in their homes. But then, out of the blue, appears an unknown man who tears the people out of their everyday lethargy. An interesting story, in which the slowly built atmosphere is spoiled by a typically Hungarian absurd situation.

Black

Tomasz Popakul | Poland, Japan | 2016 | 15 min

This dismal and claustrophobic film takes place aboard a space station. The Earth was plunged into nuclear war and all attempts to make contact with the home planet are futile. Both crew members – a man and a woman – suspect that they have nowhere to return to. The Polish director made the film during a residency in Japan and blended two different cultures in it.

A non-traditional story with a simple beginning – we see a saleswoman in an optic shop, her customers and their visual impairments. But the author suddenly has the saleswoman track her customers to places we wouldn’t expect and the story takes on an unforeseen pace. Among other things, this absurd Finnish film has a very distinct visual style.

Corner

Lucija Mrzljak | Estonia | 2016 | 3 min

This visually minimalistic short film in the best tradition of Estonian humour deals with the hardships of life in a corner where two angles meet. Existence seems very hard here – laws of perspective and gravity play strange games so the whole image becomes geometrically relative and the characters lose their ground.

We Are the Immigrants

Catalina Matamoros | Colombia, United States | 2016 | 6 min

This poetic but at times cruel film centres on the hardships of a group of immigrants who decided to illegally cross the border. The film itself is a curious paradox – it mixes a serious topic, documentary approach and slightly infantile stylized drawing. The Columbian author studied animation in the US.

Léo Suchel | France | 2016 | 3 min

You don’t see many entirely hand-drawn animated films any more. In Keep Going!, the author uses the dinginess of paper and manual work including all its tiny imperfections and even animates the numbering phase. His film shows a sort of mechanized system which is endangered by a grain of sand.

Hot Dog Hands

For an obscure plot revolving around a woman who, without being able to control it, grows extra fingers, the author naturally chose a non-traditional form. A tragicomic film about a failed suicide. The film’s main hero comes from a family with a long line of unattractive people. Powerlessness against this genetic injustice forces him to make a radical decision – but events go in a different way than he would have expected. Georgios Cherouvim | United States | 2016 | 6 min

What does a digital object sound like? Geometric objects are stored as a series of points, which are connected to form a continuous surface. Each point is associated with a set of 3D coordinates. Here, the coordinates of a given object are plotted along the point index to form three individual graphs which later turn into two channels, transforming the topological information into audible tracks.

The content of this work is about code, the code that surrounds us, that builds the chains of life, the code that is the source of all living and non-living structures. One of the thematic emphases of Heidi Hörsturz’s work is the desire of the contemporary society to get more overstimulation in rapidly shrinking attention spans. The repression of self-reflection with audiovisual brain attacks represents a striving for an artificially constructed world.

The Red Turtle

Michael Dudok de Wit | France, Belgium, Japan | 2016 | 80 min

Appropriate for children over 8

This feature debut of the renowned Dutch director Michaël Dudok de Wit is a very unusual film for contemporary cinema. It expresses itself (much like the director’s short films) only through images and touching music. In a slowly unfolding story, we watch an unknown castaway stranded on a desert island inhabited only by animals. Our hero gradually unravels the mysteries of the island and, in particular, its fauna. Even though it seems that he is on an abandoned island with no traces of human civilization, his fate is a universal metaphor for all the decisive moments in human life. This magical film about getting to know oneself, parenthood, generation exchange, and the relation of man and nature, was the first film of the famous Studio Ghibli made outside of Japan. But just like Miyazaki’s films, it boasts elaborate 2D animation and a magical ethereal atmosphere clear of any references to a particular period of time or nationality.

Nerdland

Chris Prynoski | United States | 2016 | 83 min

Up until now, American director Chris Prynoski’s domain was the world of television and serials. In his feature debut set in the contemporary USA, two failures turned 30, Elliot and John, are trying to become famous, no matter the cost. They come up with the most bizarre ways to make it into the spotlight. They crave for a world where being famous means having all they want: beautiful women and a bottomless bank account. All their endeavours are by definition doomed to fail and as their plans radicalize, the damages they cause escalate with them. The absurdity of the situations results in comical scenes but is also a critical poke at the current mood of (not only) American society.
The artistic style of the film is reminiscent of American television series. It’s interesting that that the concept of the story was originally pitched by screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en, 8mm, Sleepy Hollow) who intended to make it as a live-action film.

The Oddsockeaters

Galina Miklínová | Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia | 2016 | 83 min

Appropriate for children over 6

The film is an adaptation of the best-selling book of the same name by Czech writer, poet and librettist Pavel Šrut. The book has two sequels, was translated into many languages and won the Magnesia Litera Book of the Decade Award in the category of books for children. Its main heroes are small invisible creatures called the Oddsockeaters who live alongside humans in their households. The Oddsockeaters eat socks, but they follow the rule saying that they should eat “only one from each pair.” The film was directed by Galina Miklínová who has helped the book to achieve immense success with her original illustrations. The film tells an adventurous gangster story of two rival Oddsockeater gangs and a clash of two generations and different moralities in a world not unlike ours, but does it with sophisticated humour without forcing it upon the viewers. The main hero is the kindly but naïve Oddsockeater Hihlík who, after the death of his grandfather, joins the mob family of his uncle Padre.  When a rival gang kidnaps his cousin, it’s time for a rescue mission. The film uses captivating 3D computer animation – while CGI often seems empty, sterile, and characters from one film resemble characters from another, the Oddsockeaters boast stylized visuals – from expressions through textures to background.

The Girl without Hands

Sébastien Laudenbach | France | 2016 | 76 min

Appropriate for children over 12

This film is inspired by one of the classical Grimms’ fairy tales. In hard times, a desperate miller makes a deal with the Devil. In exchange for immense wealth, the miller unwittingly promises his only daughter to the Devil. However, the girl is so pure that the Devil cannot take her. The miller, blinded by gold, even tries to help the Devil to complete their deal. After several attempts, the girl is deprived of her hands and then escapes home. Her faith in life is, however, stronger than her despair and she finds herself at a castle and eventually marries a prince who is enchanted by her purity. But the shape-shifting Devil is constantly at her heels so the girl must flee once again… This symbol-filled film refers to the deepest parts of the human subconscious and the characters in fact represent various elements of the human soul. The film is an impressive portrayal of the principles of good and evil and the light and dark sides of our personalities in an eternal struggle for power. Its artistic style is also very daring; the authors work only with hints of characters and settings, and yet, the clusters of lines give a true picture of what they want to express. Despite their transparency and visual simplicity, the characters have powerful and engaging personalities.

My Life as a Zucchini

Claude Barras | Switzerland, France | 2016 | 66 min

Appropriate for children over 6

After his mother’s sudden death, a nine-year-old boy nicknamed Zucchini ends up in an orphanage. At first, he feels lonely, but later realizes that he’s not. There are Simon, Ahmed, Jujube Alice, Béatrice and also Camille with whom he falls head over heels in love. Each of the children has their own dark story, but their cheerfulness prevails over their sad past. The main heroes of the film are depicted at an age when they discover the world and learn how to deal with it. On the path to happiness, a group of friends and first love play important roles. The boy finds a mentor and tutor in the local policeman who helps him to overcome every obstacle. The film is a perfect example of excellent modern puppet animation where the stylization of the characters doesn’t weaken the plot and its authenticity. The film has already won several awards – it won the Viewer’s Choice Award at the Annecy Film Festival, it was screened in Cannes and also voted the Best European Animated Film of 2016. My Life as a Zucchini is the feature debut of the renowned producer and director Claude Barrase who specializes in stop-motion animation. The Anifilm audiences have already had a chance to see some of his films such as Chamber 69 (Chambre 69, 2012) and Land of the Heads (Au Pays des Têys , 2008).

Ethel and Ernest

Roger Mainwood | United Kingdom, Luxembourg | 2016 | 94 min

Based on the 1998 book by the acclaimed British author and illustrator, this hand-drawn, animated feature film tells the true story of Raymond’s parents – Ethel and Ernest – two ordinary Londoners living through a period of extraordinary events and immense social change.
Humorous and bittersweet, the film follows the lives of lady’s maid Ethel and milkman Ernest from their first chance meeting in 1928, through the birth of their son Raymond in 1934, to their deaths, within months of each other, in 1971.
From the socially stratified 1920s to the moon landing of 1969, the film depicts, through Ethel and Ernest’s eyes, the most defining moments of the 20th century: the darkness of the Great Depression, the build up to World War II, the trials of the war years, the euphoria of VE Day and the emergence of a generation from post war austerity to the cultural enlightenment of the 1960s. To correspond with the story reflecting an enclosed historical period, the authors have chosen to take a conservative approach to the animation method and storytelling. The film can, however, captivate the viewers and take them to a faithfully depicted 20th century Britain where they will witness the troubled lives of the heroes.

Molly Monster

Ted Sieger | Germany, Switzerland, Sweden | 2016 | 72 min

Appropriate for children over 3

A small dragon-like creature named Molly Monster is a popular character from a TV series which was adapted into a feature film. This charming film was made for the youngest audiences. For a long time, Molly was an only child who enjoyed the limitless attention of her parents, but her life suddenly changes as her sibling is about to hatch. Molly is looking forward to becoming a big sister, but she can’t imagine what it is actually going to be like. She will have to put up with her new role in the family and understand that mom and dad are here not only for her sake. The pain she is experiencing is confusing and catches her by surprise. The situation is reflected in her relationship with Edison, a living toy and her best friend, who is also afraid that he will lose his place in the family. The adventure starts when Molly sets out to see her parents on an island where children are hatched and where the eggs need to be placed. Molly and Edison get lost on the way, stray into the Wild Mountains, experience many adventures and in the end come to realize that they have become independent. The graphic style of the film is very playful and understandable for children – what is spooky is also humorous and what is dangerous always turns out just fine.

My Entire High School Sinking into The Sea

Dash Shaw | United States | 2016 | 77 min

Director Dash Shaw has adapted one of his graphic novels into his feature film debut. The film is a peculiar collage of artistic styles and film genres. Techniques of catastrophic films mingle with a high school comedy and a satire on blockbusters.
Dash and his best friend Assaf are preparing for another year at Tides High School, muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper, edited by their friend Verti. But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship, Dash learns of the administration’s cover-up that puts all the students in danger. As disaster strikes and the friends race to escape through the roof of the school, they are joined by a popular know-it-all and a lunch lady who is much more than meets the eye. But even as the film piles on details like a post-apocalyptic cult formed by jocks, video game homages, and an infectious synth soundtrack, it never loses sight of the characters at the heart of the story. The film’s everyday concerns of friendships, cliques and young love remind us of how the high school experience continues to shape who we become, even in the most unusual of circumstances.
Teenage characters are voiced by Hollywood stars such as Jason Schwartzman, Lena Dunham and Susan Sarandon.

Louise by the Shore

Jean-François Laguionie | France, Canada | 2016 | 75 min

On the last day of summer, Louise realizes that the last train has left without her. She ends up alone in the deserted streets of a small seaside resort town, abandoned by everyone. The weather quickly turns for the worse, followed by the seasonal tides. Louise takes her abandonment as a challenge. She builds herself a cabin on the shore, discovering at the age of 75 a Robinson Crusoe-like life, and realizes that she is more resistant and resourceful than she could have ever imagined. An old dog, Pepper, comes to share Louise’s meals and accompany her.
Why haven’t the vacationers come back for Christmas or Easter? Even the helicopter that flies over the shore from time to time has gone missing! Is it because of the seasonal tides? Has she been punished? This idea provokes strange dreams. Childhood memories rise to the surface and seize the opportunity to join in the adventure: Louise, age eight, has been left with her grandmother! Why?
A great cliff, in the distance, seems to hold the key to her long lost memories. The trip she takes with Pepper is a new adventure that will bring more of her forgotten past back to her: Louise at eighteen with her two sweethearts and the little dramas of her teenage years. Once back at their cabin, they return to their daily lives. The vacationers return in July; Louise has decided she won’t ask herself any more questions…
