Long Way North is the directorial debut of French animator Rémi Chayé who gained experience from the acclaimed films The Secret of Kells (2009) and The Painting (Le Tableau, 2011). Long Way North is an adventurous and slightly chilling film set in Russia in 1892. Sasha, a young aristocrat whose parents are desperately trying to establish their family amongst the nobility, is fascinated by her explorer grandfather. Fancy balls are not a thing that would interest Sasha and the endeavours of her parents who are trying to find a fine husband for her only terrify her. Sasha’s grandfather failed to return from an expedition to the North Pole and his ship was never found. Although the Tsar off ers a considerable reward for finding the ship, everyone except Sasha has already forgotten him. Nonetheless she finds his maps and decides to look for the ship herself and save her grandfather’s reputation. She sets out on an unexpectedly hard and dangerous voyage into a land of eternal ice. During the voyage, she meets various people and experiences many adventures on the border of life and death. The visually captivating artistry makes the story all the more compelling.
