Jaromír Plachý

Masterclass: Overview of Jaromír Plachý and his Work

Jaromír Plachý | Czech Republic | 90 min

Jaromír Plachý is our juror for the games category this year. He is the author of computer games Chuchel and Botanicula that were made in the studio Amanita Design. But apart from developing games, Jaromír, who studied animation, also makes films and in his masterclass, or should we say goofyclass, he will give us an overview of his audio-visual work. And he will do it by showing a mix of more than twenty music videos, short films, festival jingles, jingles that nobody wanted, and last but not least also computer games he worked on as a designer, screenwriter or animator.

The screening will be accompanied by his fitting remarks regarding his own person which should shed some light on what brought him to the world of animation, how it happened that he started making games, how these two fields interconnect, why his games are perceived as not games by a number of gamers and why his films are often not made for audiences.

You will have a chance to interrupt his monologue with questions that he will happily answer. Mostly.

Chuchel + DVA (live gaming)

Last March, Amanita Design released into the rocks of the world an outcry of a neurotic fluff ball named Chuchel and his bald helper/rival Kekel who repeatedly try to get at least to the cherry stalk in a grotesque game. But the more we want something, the likelier it is that we lose it. Echoes came back very soon and so Chuchel, apart from excited reviews, got a “game Oscar” from the Independent Games Festival. The game will be played live by its author himself, Jaromír Plachý, who will be accompanied by the band DVA (who made the game’s soundtrack) in its so far most synthesizered form. “It’s just adowable” says Martin Macháček from Radio Wave when describing the game.
