Fruits of Clouds

Kateřina Karhánková | Czech Republic | 2017 | 10 min

In One Drag

Alireza Hashempour | Germany | 2016 | 4 min

Late night, a man leaves a building and, as he always does, throws away a cigarette butt. But this time, there are consequences. When a pile of cigarette butts comes to life, the man realizes that his life is in danger… This funny film with a strong message masterfully combines pixilation with computer animation. A humorous short for non-smokers.

Flying Putzi

Ido Behar | Israel | 2016 | 7 min

A sad and powerful story about a simple-minded boy who is convinced that he will learn to fly. Putzi’s only kindred spirit is a hen called Pepi who – not entirely willingly – accompanies him during his attempts. But when other children get involved, Putzi is in danger. The director sensitively portrays bullying and loneliness.

Tour

Jasmijn Cedee | Belgium, Netherlands | 2016 | 3 min

This energy-filled film depicts a fierce bicycle race. In the two minutes of the film’s running time, the author, who originally graduated in cinematography, managed to combine several animation techniques including the demanding technique of paint-on-glass animation and rotoscoping. The film is an homage to bicycle racing and to the indoor cycling velodrome in Ghent, Belgium, which hosts the famous race Six Days of Ghent.

The Umbrella Man

Aymeric Hays Narbonne | France | 2016 | 4 min

This film anecdote tells the story of a man and his cunning way of making money to spend in the local pub. It is set in a colourful French town. It is raining and a mother and a daughter come across a weirdo who wants to sell them his umbrella. The author managed to create a wonderful fairy-tale like stylization of the town and her characters, but also perfectly timed her punchline.

Beside Oneself

Karolina Specht | Poland | 2016 | 5 min

In her film, the director confronts a man and a woman whose relationship has gone cold. This sad and artistically minimalistic story is condensed into several telling scenes. The director focuses on the issue of whether love and partnership are based on what your partner is actually like or on our false notion of his/her character.

Modulatorie

Alžběta Burešová | Czech Republic | 2016 | 4 min

This animated slapstick stars a vicious shadow and its owner. When the shadow gets fed up of being a shadow, the situation can evolve into a series of unexpected events in a dangerously mobile household. This film created at the University of West Bohemia, whether knowingly or unwittingly, follows the artistic style of Zdeněk Smetana’s iconic film The End of the Cube.

Come to Me

Marta Reis Andrade | United Kingdom, Portugal | 2016 | 5 min

The film is a suggestive depiction of adolescence, which can be very painful and confusing for a girl. The protagonist changes before our very eyes and it seems that she is not sure whether it is a change for the better or worse. The director, who studied in many countries (including the Czech Republic and New Zealand), exposes her heroine when she is seemingly hurt.

Once Upon a Line

Alicja Jasina | United States | 2016 | 8 min

The life of the film’s protagonist may be monotonous, but it follows a clear set of rules. And yet the man feels that he is missing something in his life. But when he crosses paths with a woman, we set out on a wild ride. The initial fascination and infatuation, however, do not last long… The author tells her story by means of colours, hints and artistic shortcuts.

Penelope

Heta Jäälinoja | Estonia, Finland | 2016 | 5 min

The heroine of this film is a scatter-brained woman who constantly gets lost in time and space and can’t seem to be able to get hold of her memories. The author, who studied in Turku, Finland and also Tallinn, Estonia, chose a nervous, almost inattentive drawing which quickly metamorphoses right in front of the viewers’ eyes.

Awaker

Filip Diviak | Czech Republic | 2017 | 10 min

This fairy-tale story is set at the beginning of the 19th century in a harsh but romantic land in the north. The hero makes his living by waking the people in his village, in all weathers. His life is a routine until the moment he gets a bell instead of money. An artistically imaginative film with a dose of nostalgia.
