Bond

Judit Wunder | Hungary | 2016 | 10 min

This artistically captivating graduation film with an atypical story portrays a woman who lives in complete solitude up until the moment she becomes close to a shadow. The cat-like shadow later disappears but three kittens emerge from the woman’s hair. The author portrays the heroine’s ambivalence between the joy of motherhood and the loss of love. But the shadow can return any time…

Keep Going!

Léo Suchel | France | 2016 | 3 min

You don’t see many entirely hand-drawn animated films any more. In Keep Going!, the author uses the dinginess of paper and manual work including all its tiny imperfections and even animates the numbering phase. His film shows a sort of mechanized system which is endangered by a grain of sand.

Race

Yan Dan Wong | United Kingdom | 2016 | 3 min

This film depicts a day of caring for a sick mother as a race that the daughter cannot win. Repeated tasks such as administering medications, washing and feeding speed up and the whole race gets out of control. The Malaysian author studied animation in London and focuses on serious social issues.

Black Volga

Marta Wiktorowicz | Poland | 2016 | 4 min

Neighbours are trying to solve the mystery of a missing child. But their conversation gets out of hand and with each new piece of information, the story becomes more surreal and less probable. The film uses artistic shortcuts and humorously shows how easily irrational panic spreads.

Hot Dog Hands

Matt Reynolds | United States | 2016 | 7 min

For an obscure plot revolving around a woman who, without being able to control it, grows extra fingers, the author naturally chose a non-traditional form. The visual style and atmosphere of his film allude to independent American serials. But the animation is authentic. The film is full of peculiar humour and has a fast pace.

The Journey Never Starts. The Journey Never Ends.

Michelle Brand | United Kingdom | 2016 | 3 min

This short film has a long but telling name. The director portrays an endless train journey across the boundaries of time and space. One thought changes into another, one association follows the other and the pulsating images are constantly on the move. A pleasant visual ride with minimalistic but lively animation.

Ascribed Achievements

Samaneh Shojaei | Iran | 2016 | 5 min

A tragicomic film about a failed suicide. The film’s main hero comes from a family with a long line of unattractive people. Powerlessness against this genetic injustice forces him to make a radical decision – but events go in a different way than he would have expected. The author used computer animation, but she managed to include the aesthetics of hand drawing with traces of sketching.

Less Than Human

Steffen Lindholm | Denmark | 2016 | 7 min

This technically brilliant, humorous, and atypically simple film portrays zombies who are deprived of their bloodlust. We see a news report of a biased reporter who, joined by his cameraman, sets out to a remote camp, where all the “cured” zombies have been deported and are living in ruthless isolation.

Day, the Chef

Shuyu Xiong | China | 2016 | 3 min

By means of very unusual gastronomic metaphors, this Chinese film shows a day in an overpopulated huge city. The film is dedicated to all the people who live in Beijing and fight every day to survive in the megalomaniac civilization machinery. But the question remains as to whether this format of modern civilization isn’t way beyond the boundaries of bearability.

Hypertrain

Etienne Kompis, Fela Bellotto | Switzerland | 2016 | 4 min

A duo of directors brings us a dreamy journey through time and space which we experience together with a lost passenger. Travelling gets a bit complicated, because in addition to Mr. Schrödinger’s cat, he suddenly comes across himself. Apart from narration, the film has a unique approach to visual style which varies black and white but also specific inputs from other colours.
