Moms on Fire

Joanna Rytel | Sweden | 2016 | 13 min

This fictitious documentary follows two mothers-to-be who are revolting against the generally accepted standards of “proper” motherhood. This esteemed humorous film full of unexpected situations animates clay puppets which are deliberately flawed, as are the characters themselves.

Satie’s “Parade”

Koji Yamamura | Japan | 2016 | 15 min

Iconic Japanese filmmaker Koji Yamamura based his new, strongly visual film on motifs by the French composer Erik Satie. The result is a unique work – an avant-garde ballet which crosses the boundaries of reality and dissolves in the abstract. All in a playful fifteen minutes.

Nighthawk

Špela Čadež | Slovenia, Croatia | 2016 | 9 min

In her latest film, Špela Čadež turned away from puppet animation and used multiplane cut-out animation. Her main hero is a badger discovered on a road by a police patrol. When the policemen find out that the animal is not dead, but only dead drunk, we set out on a wild ride that will (probably) uncover the course of events.

Among the Black Waves

Anna Budanova | Russia | 2016 | 12 min

This visually sophisticated dark film is based on an ancient Norse legend in which the souls of drowned people turn into seals. In an inhospitable land by the sea, a fisherman takes hold of such a soul, hides the sealskin, and marries the girl who was underneath it. But what he doesn’t realise is how strong the call of the ocean is for his wife…

Animated Daily

Donato Sansone | France | 2016 | 4 min

This original animated improvisation takes place directly on the pages of the French daily Libération. This unscripted film by the master on unusual animation techniques, Italian director Donato Sansone, was inspired by the actual events the newspaper referred to. By means of functional shortcuts, the author creates pertinent comic and tragic scenes on the pages of the newspaper.

Impossible Figures and Other Stories II

Marta Pajek | Poland | 2016 | 15 min

Marta Pajek’s film about a woman living in a very weird home may lack colour, but it certainly doesn’t lack inventiveness. The main heroine of the film wakes up in the morning only to find that her household is composed of incomprehensible paradoxes filled with illusions and covered by manifold patterns. The author’s work is based on symbols and a heavy atmosphere.
