The Challenge to Death

Juan Pablo Zaramella | Argentina | 2011 | 4 min

Fahaki Ayunanda faces one of the biggest challenges in his life. This slapstick comedy depicts a cunning test of courage which seems rather outlandish in its oriental setting. The author took advantage of the possibilities of claymation and compressed the story into a single scene taking place within three minutes.

The Glove

Juan Pablo Zaramella | Argentina | 2001 | 10 min

When a man unexpectedly receives a leather glove, his uneventful life suddenly changes. After he puts the glove on, he loses control of himself and against his will takes part in an unknown scheme. This rather sad slapstick comedy about one’s personal freedom has a tragicomic end but also operates with exaggeration and specific humour.

This story about children’s dreams focuses on the relations between (grand)parents and children, whose worlds do not have to be as distant and different as they may seem.

Lapsus

Juan Pablo Zaramella | Argentina | 2007 | 4 min

Lapsus is an unbelievably ingenious depiction of a curious nun trying to venture into the dark part of the world. Once she sets out on her journey, it seems that there is no way back… The film’s author used the contrast of black and white and made maximum use of the principles of black light theatre. Like his other independent films, Lapsus won many awards at various international festivals.

At the Opera

Juan Pablo Zaramella | Argentina | 2010 | 1 min

This witty puppet slapstick with an unexpected ending takes place in the noble setting of an opera which is putting on a very moving performance. The story seems so touching that the audience may flood the theatre with their tears. Apart from its theme, the film stands out with excellent timing and a sense for the absurdity of the situation.

HotCorn!

Juan Pablo Zaramella | Argentina | 2011 | 1 min

This short and inventive film is an excellent example of perfect pixilation – a technique of animating live actors. We watch a performer on a stage doing tricks with a corn-cob. But sometimes things tend to get out of hand…which, however, does not diminish his success with the audience.
