Charles-Émile Reynaud

Charles-Émile Reynaud is an important figure in the prehistory of cinema. With his praxinoscope, he expanded upon earlier attempts at animating drawn images: thaumatropes, phenakistoscopes, stroboscopes, zoetropes, tachyscopes and other optical toys that had been popular in their time. On 28 October 1892, he organized the first public screening of his optical theatre (Théâtre Optique) – an improvement of the original praxinoscope that predated the Lumière brothers’ first film screening by a full three years, thus presaging the phenomenon of movie theatres. The exhibition organized on the 120th anniversary of this event presents several of Reynaud’s inventions held by the Foto-Kino department of the National Technical Museum in Prague. The items on display include Reynaud’s original praxinoscope, his optical theatre, and a segment of filmstrip used in his Optical Theatre.

Journey to the Beginning of Time

Journey to the Beginning of Time

The first attempts at making an animated film are closely associated with comics. Prior to appearing on the big screen, many early animated heroes had lived parallel lives on the pages of newspaper inserts – and vice versa, some characters from film saw their success translated into a comics version. The exhibition shows examples from the distant “prehistory” of the rapidly developing film medium with a view towards its relationship to comic strips. In many cases, these “old” creations can strike us as more than contemporary.
