Anifilm joined with Komiksfest to hold a competition for the best comic strip on the subject of “A meeting of strangers”. The winning artist was Roman Kelbich with his strip Time for a Snack.
The winners in the Animation Street Fight (organized by the creative team from Kreus under the auspices of Anifilm) were Ladislav Rejkuba and Daniel Stanchev.

Other prizes and special mentions were announced as part of the Visegrad Animation Forum professional programme.

ANIFILM 04
This year’s Anifilm presented 290 films of varying length, from many different countries, and of varying age. Visitors were taken on a journey through time spanning more than 120 years – from the very beginnings of animation to the latest works. They could see recently created projects and works in progress made by domestic and foreign filmmakers. The festival included not only screenings, but also offered lectures, workshops, presentations, exhibitions and concerts, all of which were popular with film professional and members of the general public.

Anifilm Echoes
Anifilm travels to other towns.
Those who could not make it to Třeboň this year can look forward to Anifilm Echoes, which will be held in several other towns throughout the Czech Republic.
In Prague, the festival will be screening the winning short films from last year’s and this year’s festivals at Era svět on May 29.

Vítězi Animation Street Fight (pořádaného v rámci ANIFILMU kreativním uskupením KREUS) se stali Ladislav Rejkuba a Daniel Stanchev.

Další ceny a čestná uznání byly uděleny i v rámci profesionálního programu Visegrad Animation Forum.

ANIFILM 04
Letošní ANIFILM nabídl 290 snímků nejrůznější metráže, země původu i doby vzniku. Provedl návštěvníky časovým rozmezím více než 120 let – od samých počátků animace až k nejnovějším novinkám, nahlédl na projekty vzniklé i ve vývoji, představil tvůrce domácí i zahraniční. Nejen projekce, ale i přednášky, workshopy, prezentace, výstavy a koncerty se těšily velkému zájmu nejen filmových profesionálů, ale i široké veřejnosti.

Today is the last chance to take advantage of Animation Workshops at the Beseda and to relax in the Chill-out Zone (chateau courtyard), and today also marks the culmination of the three-day Visegrad Animation Forum, our programme for professionals.

This year’s Anifilm has focused extensively on the UPA studio. In the Focus section, you’ll today find a series of films by other studios with which UPA successfully competed (such as Warner Bros and MGM) as well as Tee Bosustow’s lecture UPA’S FIRST-TIME DIRECTORS.

At 1pm, audiences can learn more about the BEAUTY OF ANIMATION PAINTING through a selection of short films made using the glass painting technique, followed by a discussion with the directors of the presented films, Michaela Müller and Lucie Sunková (moderated by Michal Procházka).

Animo TV presents the best animated television series. Today at 4.30pm, we present the popular series for teenagers ADVENTURE TIME, which includes elements of comedy and fantasy. Where else to go after school than the Czech Television Auditorium (Sál České televise) at the chateau!

At 7pm at the J. K. Tyl Theatre, we will hold the FESTIVAL’S CLOSING CEREMONY, moderated by Perla Kotmelová and Tomáš Měcháček. Here, you will hear the winners of the main Anifilm prize as well as the films receiving the jury’s special mention. At the same time, we will be screening the Oscar-winning Brave on Masaryk Square. Admission free!

But that in no way means that the programme is any less interesting or is just coasting into the home stretch – quite the opposite, in fact. The programme is reaching its climax for film professionals, the general public, and child audiences.
The Visegrad Animation Forum, a professional meeting organized in collaboration with the Association of Czech Animation, is now entering its second day.

What happens in a sandbox after the children have gone home? The invisible sandpixies George and Agatha come out and things start to happen … Animo TV presents director Ralf Kukula’s SANDPIXIES, a popular television series for the youngest audiences. The animation is done using the unique process of 2D sand animation.
At 1pm, the programme continues with Helena Diesing’s captivating lecture WALT DISNEY VS. ART. The king of sentimentality, a cult figure in animated film, the founder of a school of artistic tradition, the essence of the American way of life, strong ties to Europe, a person respected and reviled in his life and afterwards … the work of Walt Disney embodies all these and many other contradictions. Come and form your own opinion.

In the afternoon and evening, audiences will again have the chance to see two blocks of films in the INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF SHORT FILMS at the J. K. Tyl Theatre at 4pm and 6pm. The winners will be announced tomorrow!

In the evening, Alicja Plodko will present the CHILDREN’S DREAM FACTORY created in 1985 at the Entropie Gallery in Wroclaw. The factory teaches children the basics of animation and uses encounters with renowned individuals to impart information from the history of animation.

On this day, too, we offer a more than diverse programme.
The sixtieth anniversary of the first Czech Television broadcast is being celebrated not only at the station headquarters. At the Chill-out Zone, audiences can see animated spots created especially to mark this anniversary. At 9am, there will be a block of popular animated children’s bedtime stories, followed at 11am by the latest such episodes and, an hour after lunch, a block of less well known animated bedtime stories for adults that were originally created for a New Year’s Eve special.

Also starting an hour after lunch is the Visegrad Animation Forum, a three-day programme for professionals being organized in collaboration with the Association of Czech Animation. The forum is being attended by around 100 internationally renowned professional animated filmmakers. Any free spaces will be made available to accredited members of the public.

Today, we will be presenting two films in competition for Anifilm’s main Animorpha Award in the category of feature-length animated film for grown-ups. The Spanish film O Apóstolo about an escaped prisoner who ends up in a very strange village is filled with a tension worthy of Agatha Christie, but also features a surreal, almost mystical atmosphere. The American dystopia Consuming Spirits took 14 years to make. The film the stories of at first glance unassuming figures in one factory town – but we soon discover that they are brought together by more than just working for the local newspaper.

On Masaryk Square at 9pm, audiences can look forward to the latest film by Tim Burton: Frankenweenie. This black-and-white film tells the story of Victor, who refuses to accept the death of his best friend, his beloved dog Sparky, a brings him back to life – with just a few minor alterations.
And for night owls, we have a concert by Hi-Fi at the festival club or a block of animated horror.

Just a sampling:

Tim Decker will present two American schools focused on animation through their best films.
Before noon we will start GAME DAY, a weekend programme focused on computer game animation during which visitors can see presentations of previously realized projects and projects in development, as well as talks by foreign and domestic game developers. Jakub Dvorský has put together a block of interesting indie games for ANIFILM. And of course you can try some of them out on your own!

At noon, renowned Czech animator, screenwriter and director Aurel Klimt will reveal that reports of the death of the first being in space have been just rumours: Laika is still alive in a far-flung corner of the galaxy – and she will soon have her own feature-length animated puppet sci-fi musical. The film’s budget is EUR 2,000,000. The presentation of this film-in-progress will take place at Třeboň’s Světozor Cinema at 12 noon.
ANIFILM presents the Czech premiere of a long-anticipated film on “the dead Python”, Graham Chapman. This open homosexual and secret alcoholic comes to life in A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. The film will be presented by three of its filmmakers: directors Ben Timlett and Jeff Simpson and animation supervisor Justin Weyers.

At 7pm in the Czech Television Auditorium (Sál ČT), visitors can look forward to a discussion panel on the subject of the UPA. This legendary company founded some 70 years ago changed our view of modern animation, and in recent years its original principles have found new relevance. Moderator: Amid Amidi; guests: Gene Deitch, Emily Hubley and many more.

In collaboration with Komiksfest, we held a contest for the best comic strip on the subject of “A meeting of strangers.” Imagine what would happened if several animated characters from various films got together.
What would they say? What situations might they get into? The winning comic strip is “Snack Break” by Roman Kelbich.

We here present a selection of the other comic strips that participated in the contest.

This year, the retrospective — the non-competition section of Anifilm — will commemorate two notable personalities of Czech animated film who departed from us last year — Břetislav Pojar and Vladimir Jiránek. The director and animator Břetislav Pojar was at the birth
of the of Bratři v triku studio and then worked for Studio Jiři Trnka for forty years. At the same time, he also spent many years creating for the National Film Board of Canada. We present a block of Pojar’s short films presenting Czechoslovakian filmmaking, as well as films made for NFB. The series Garden and The Butterfly Time, the combined feature film will not be missing either. Vaclav Bedřich, the director of popular bedtime stories, brought director and artist Vladimír Jiránek to film; the unforgettable Pat and Mat from the series And that’s it! or Bob a Bobek, Two Rabbits from a Magician’s Hat was the outcome of this cooperation. Jiránek cooperated with the Bratři v triku and AIF studios. During the presentation, we will also show his in- dependent films, including the film What did we do to the Hens, for which he won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.

Three exhibitions which, among others, are supplementing the thematic sphere of the projection are prepared for visitors. Three excellent bands will appear during the festival, and every night, one of the DJ's will spin a dance set.

The sonorous, airy guitars of Please the Trees, a band that cannot be overlooked not only in the Czech indie-rock scene will ring on Saturday 4. 5. Electronic dance music and jazz, a stylish range of dance rhythms reaching from hip-hop, through reggae and all the way to drum n’ bass, that’s the band Hi-fi, which plays on Sunday 5. 5. The music group Urban Trio, whose creative opus draws on the tradition of blues, the swing era and especially from modern jazz, will close the concerts.

Charles-Émile Reynaud — an exhi- bition named after the French inventor who in his time was ahead of the Lumiere brothers thanks to a device called the praxinoscope. The exhibition, organized for the 120th anniversary since the first presentation of Théâtre Optique (which was played at the Musée Grévin) presents preserved fragments of Reynaud’s works and devices, represented in the collections of the National Technical Museum in Prague. The exhibition titled Journey to the Beginning of Time will intimately remind us of the connection of the first attempts at animated film with comics. The exhibition presents examples from the dawn of this rapidly developing film medium, taking into account its connection with comic strips and showing that period films are in many cases more effective than contemporary ones. Czech and foreign illustrators will present their most recent work in the touring exhibition, The Best of Illustrations of 2012. Members of the Club of Children’s Book Illustrators will present their work together with illustrators nominated for the “Golden Ribbon” annual prize, which is awarded for the best books for children and the youth.

Numerous notable guests, both local and foreign, are visiting this year’s Anifilm. The actual three-day Visegrad Animation Forum programme alone will welcome approximately hundreds of film professionals from all parts of the globe to Treboň. We are very pleased to have some of the notable personalities of the world of animated film returning to Treboň — such as Gene Deitch or Emily Hubley. They and other guests will attend the panel discu- ssion on the theme of UPA, which will be moderated by Amid Amidi, one of the members of the jury for the international competition of animated feature films. Films from the competition of feature films will be presented personally by e.g. Fernando Cortizo, director of the Spanish film The Pilgrim, or Columbian director Carlos Osuna, who will bring the film Fat Bald Short Man. You definitely cannot overlook the three-member delegation (directors Ben Timlett, Jeff Simpson and supervisor of animation Justin Weyers) for the film A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. This noteworthy film about the life of one of the legendary Monty Pythons will have its Czech premiere at Anifilm! Guillermo García Carsí (filmmaker of Pocoyo, the well-known series for pre-school children) will bring his film to the competition for short films; he will also contribute his lecture El Seňor studio to what’s on offer in the special programme. Sylvie Saerens will give an interesting lecture on her great grandfather, French inventor Charles-Émil Reynaud. Timothy Decker will present two American schools focused on the study of animation. Two notable directors, Florence Miailhe and Michaela Mueller will outline for guests the beauty and technique of glass painting. Borivoj Dovnikovič, one of the central figures of Croatian animated film, is coming to present a set of films by the Zagreb film school, put together exclusively for this year’s Anifilm. From among Czech filmmakers, expect to see Michaela Pavlátová, Pavel Koutský, Vratislav Hlavatý, Jan Tománek (director of the film A Goat’s Story with Cheese, who will be competing for the main prize of the festival in the international competition for children’s feature films), Denisa Grimmová, Jakub Dvorský (who, among others, put together a set of noteworthy indie games for Anifilm; we are introducing them in the context of Game Day), Petr Skoumal, Galina Miklíková, Miroslav Kořínek, Jiří Barta, Bára Dlouhá, Vlasta Pospíšilová, Aurel Klimt (he is also bringing a presentation of his sci-fi musical Lajka that he has prepared) and many more.

As in the past, this year’s ANIFILM has prepared a rich programme for children of all ages, from the youngest kids to teenagers.

The International Competition of Feature Films will feature five children’s movies. Denmark’s Jelly T tells the story
of a boy who discovers that being big and strong isn’t necessarily a good thing. An inconspicuous construction worker is turned into a hero not unlike Indiana Jones in Spain’s Tad, the Lost Explorer. Meanwhile, the childhood hero of the French film Day of the Crows must confront the positive and negative sides of civilization. Also in competition are the Belgian-French co-production Zarafa about the strength of the friendship between the boy Maki and the young giraffe Zarafa, and the Czech animated film Goat Story 2. This sequel to the first Czech animated 3D film again transports us to medieval Prague.

The Focus section is dedicated to one of the main themes of this year’s ANIFILM: the very beginnings of animated film. Especially for children, the sub-section The Early Days of Czech Animation includes a block of the earliest Czech animated films for children (Wedding in the Coral Sea, A Christmas Dream, Ferda the Ant, and The Adventure of Seen-it-All). The films will be shown from their original 35mm copies.

In Animo TV, children (and adults) can look forward to two blocks of the most popular Czech animated bedtime stories (Večerníčky), as well as several newer ones. Foreign films include the series for small children The Sandpixies, made using sand animation, and the American adventure-comedy-fantasy series for teenagers, Adventure Time.

In Taking Stock, young audiences can look forward to last year’s blockbusters ParaNorman, Frankenweenie, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Madagascar 3 and the Oscar-winning Brave. This year’s Retrospective is dedicated to Vladimír Jiránek and Břetislav Pojar. In addition to their other films, we will also recall Bojar’s unjustly overlooked feature-length combined live-action/animation film The Butterfly Time (1990), a modern fairy-tale about the adolescent Jenda and his mysterious friend Urugu – a fairy that hatched from an exotic butterfly cocoon. And in our retrospective of the films of Adolf Born children can look forward not only to their old friends Mach and Šebestová or Sophie the monkey, but also to the multiple-award-winning feature film The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Sailor of York.

In our traditional animation workshops, children can create their own animated work under the direction of ex- perienced instructors. Author and illustrator of the book The History of Europe
– A Journey in Pictures Renata Fučíková will lead the workshop A Bridge Across History, where participants can help to create a cardboard castle. And this year’s Children’s Theatre Performances offer four different plays.

The weekend days in Třeboň will be dedicated to game animation. Domestic and foreign designers will present popular games as well as projects in development, present screenings, and offer audiences the chance to play the games themselves.

Games and Their Designers presents the current generation of game designers, including board games and interactive projects. The lecture series How Games are Made will take a behind-the-scene look at new independent gaming titles. Czech game designers (Martin Boháč, Jakub Miller, Prokop Smetana and Daniela Stamílová) will be on hand to discuss their experiences. The moderated meeting of filmmakers and game developers will focus on various aspects of cooperation between these two main sectors of the creative industry. An evening dedicated
to indie games will present a selection of interesting game creations compiles by Jakub Dvorský (the author of numerous computer games, and a nominee for the Czech Lion for his work on the film Kooky), as well as the games Lume and Lumino City, which Luke Whittaker is creating in his studio entirely out of paper. And finally, Ed Key and David Kanaga will present their award-winning game Proteus.

Lectures, workshops and discussion form an integral part of ANIFILM’s special programme. This year, we offer a diverse range of possibilities. Here are just a few.

One workshop that is guaranteed to catch your interest is Animation Street Fight, organized by the Kreus art group. Teams of experienced animators will stage eight original street battles. They have only four hours (and their imagination) to create their animation, and two finished fights are brought straight to the screen each day. For competitive souls, there is also the Animation Karaoke Battle from Slovakia’s Anča Fest, which is open to anyone daring to provide a live overdub for a randomly chosen animated film. And for all who enjoy the fast and incisive humour of comic strips and would like to see how they are made, there is Daniel Černý’s workshop Comic Strip.

Of our wide range of lectures, we can recommend Early Disney by Helena Diesing, who will discuss one of the central figures of international cinema. The subject of animated film soundtracks will be discussed in Music and Sound in Animated Film, a lecture by Polish composer Lukasz Targosz, and in The Early Days of Music in Animated Film, in which Roman Truksa focuses on the early work of Max Fleischer and Walt Disney. Also looking at the very beginnings of animated film is a lecture by Sylvie Saerense, the great-granddaughter of Charles-Émile Reynaud, who first presented his Théâtre Optique 120 years ago. The lecture includes a screening of two of Reynaud’s surviving films – Pauvre Pierrot from 1892 and Autour d’une Cabine from 1895. Michaela Mertová of the National Film Archive will address the early days of animated film in the Czech Republic, and audiences can enjoy the charm of painted glass animation through a commented selection of short films made by filmmakers in attendance at the festival. The UPA Generation discussion panel provides a chance to meet filmmakers and friends associated with the legendary UPA studio; guests include Gene Deitch (one of the legendary company’s last living directors) and Emily Hubley (daughter of one of UPA’s founders, John Hubley).

The first set of screenings is scheduled for 15 April! Starting at 7pm, you can look forward to a special retrospective of films by Břetislav Pojar and Vladimír Jiránek, followed at 9pm by screenings of horror films.

The second Anifilm Echoes is scheduled for 19 April. The programme starts with Estonian animation for children at 5pm, followed by films from Israel’s Bezabel Academy of Art and Design at 7pm.

The main festival competition consists 
of a selection of ten feature-length and 
50 short animated films from around the world. Some of the films will be shown exclusively at ANIFILM, most of them as Czech premieres. The festival also traditionally focuses on emerging domestic filmmakers by giving them the chance to participate in the Czech-Slovak competition of student films. Feature films for children and adults will be judged by Igor Prassel, programming director of the Animateka International Animated Film Festival in Slovenia, leading American curator and journalist Amid Amidi, and Portuguese director Regina Pessoa,
who has received numerous international awards for her original films. The winners in the other two categories (International Competition of Animated Short Films and Czech-Slovak Student Competition) will be decided by an international jury as well. This year’s jury consists of Irish artist Stefano Scapolan, Polish theorist and pedagogue Alicja Jodko, and Petr Koliha, programming director for the planned Czech Television children’s channel. The winners receive not only the main prize, Animated World in a Bottle, but also walk away with cash prizes with a combined value of 4,000 euros. This year’s Focus section looks at the important international production company United Production of America. UPA was a revolutionary company founded towards the end of World War II by dissatisfied artists and animators from the Walt Disney Studios who were unwilling to submit to the company’s strict templates and avoidance of taboo subjects. The dispute culminated in a strike and their subsequent firing. In response, they established the small UPA studio, which promoted the technique of limited animation. The company’s innovations were soon recognized and adopted by other important studios. Our survey of UPA’s most important products was put together by the legendary Gene Deitch. This director and writer of animated films had his first breakthrough with UPA in the late ’40s and early ’50s, and is the creator, among others, of the character Foofle and the censored film Giants, which criticized conditions in socialist Czechoslovakia. Deitch will be joined by several other eminent guests for a panel discussion of UPA.

A new addition to this year’s festival in Třeboň is the three-day professional program Visegrad Animation Forum. VAF acts as a meeting ground for leading independent producers of animated films, representatives of television companies producing animated serials, and professional filmmakers from throughout Europe, who will attend presentations (pitching) of selected ideas for short films, as well as screenings of television serials from our region. The aim of VAF is to familiarize local professionals with leading figures of international animated production and production standards, thus contributing significantly to the expansion of co-productions. Among others, French producer Dora Benousilio will present the famous glass painting films of Florence Miailhe; producer Olivier de Bannes will present the first ever puppet film produced by Folioscope; German co-producer Christian Mueller will offer a presentation of his international film Father, created by filmmakers from Bulgaria and Croatia; and a special program looks at the Swiss studio Nadasdy Film.

As in past years, Anifilm will again assess the state of contemporary animated film by presenting the most popular and most interesting animated features to be shown in Czech cinemas last year. The films will be screened on Masaryk Square and on the “Svět” pond after dusk. This year’s films include Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie as well as the lesser known The Suicide Shop (based on a book by Jean Teulé), which tells the story of a peculiar shop- keeping family whose youngest child – against all the “rules” of running a store for suicides and people who have lost all hope – is an indefatigable optimist. Other films on the program include Madagascar 3, ParaNorman, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and the Oscar-winning Brave.

I. year of Visegrád Animation Forum held at ANIFILM 2013 calls for submissions of animation short film projects or tv series projects in concept into the pitching competition.

The pitching competition is organized by the Association of Czech Animation (Asociace animovaného filmu) as a part of the Visegrad Animation Forum (VAF, 5-7 May) held at the International Festival of Animation Film in Třeboň Anifilm (3-8 May). The competition is non-statutory and it is opened to any East European or Visegrad project or to a project that emphasises values of East and West European culture exchange and collaboration. The selection committee of professionals will choose 8 short film projects and 7 TV series submitted projects to be presented in the final VAF competition.
Their authors will be able to present the selected projects at the Visegrád Animation Forum 2013 pitching session in front of international producers, professionals, TV commission editors and potential co-producers. Each project can be represented by at most one author and one producer at the final pitching session.
The pitching jury of international professionals will then award the Best short film project with the Prize of CZECH TELEVISION including the grant of 2000 EUR for further development of the film. The pitching jury of international professionals will also select the Best TV series project.

o   The Visegrád Animation Forum accepts only short film projects of films under 20 minutes
o   At least 50 percent of the short film must be done with an animation or multimedia technique with the emphasis on the graphic form of the final result.
o  The project must have a producer who can represent it at the pitching competition, alone or with one author (filmmaker or designer).
o   There is no submission fee. .
o   The project must be accompanied by the info provided in the online internet form:
•    a description of the basic idea or logline
•    a synopsis (250 words)
•    a treatment + director’s explication, realistic estimation of a budget (500 words)
•    examples of graphic and visual style
•    a short biography of the director (50 words)
•    info about the production company and contacts (50 words)


CONDITIONS OF APPLICATIONS FOR TV SERIES SUBMISSION
o The Visegrád Animation Forum accepts only TV animation series projects with episodes of standard diffusion length.
o  At least 50 percent of the TV animation series must be done with an animation technique with the emphasis on the graphic form of the final result.
o  The project must have a producer who can represent it at the pitching competition, alone or with one author (filmmaker or designer), and a plan for TV co-production or TV diffusion.
o   There is no submission fee.
o   The series project must be accompanied by the info provided in the online internet form:
o   a logline
o   a description of the main story line and poetics (250 words)
o  a treatment with the description of the target group, number of episodes, budget and TV development and release plan (500 words)
o   examples of visual style and main characters
o   a short biography of the main director (50 words)
o   a presentation of the production company and a possible TV partner + contacts (50 words)


DETAILS ABOUT THE TRAINING AND A PITCHING
Participants of the Visegrád Animation Forum’s pitching will be able to attend special preparation workshops in order to work on their projects under the guidance of professionals. The workshops will be held on the first day of the three-day programme. The final pitching will be held on the last (third) day. Every participating team will have 10 minutes to present their project in front of the jury and the audience.

The Visegrad Animation Forum will cover the accommodation at the festival hotel, the transport from the Prague airport and the modest hospitality during the 3-day event.

This event also offers unique possibilities of meeting foreign professionals and producers looking for new talents and interesting topics from our region. The programme will offer formal and informal opportunities to meet them and discuss possibilities of co-production in our region between countries with different production capacity. There will also be several case studies presented of such co-production cooperation.

More than 600 animated short and feature films; over 500 awards on festivals all over the world. Those are the results of 50 years of existence of the Croatian production company Zagreb Film. A selection of their most essential films will be chosen and presented at Anifilm by the legendary director Borivoj Dovniković himself, one of the leading representatives of the Zagreb animation school.

Do you like the fabulous duo Wallace and Gromit or the comedy Chicken Run?
If you do, you will be delighted to hear that this year, Peter Lord, who has among other films directed the aforementioned two, has chosen the section Views present works that have influenced and shaped his career. Director and co-founder of the Academy Award holding British studio Aardman Animation has last year directed the blockbuster The Pirates! Band of Misfits that will be shown on this year’s Anifilm as well. Come and find out what films have amazed and inspired this renowned artist!

You can’t even imagine how pleased we were last year to find out how much you like to get scared in the theatres. We will continue with our nightly animated horror screenings and again present an international mix of animated films full of horrors. You can look forward to older as well as newer pieces, full-feature and short films, known and unknown works.

The International Festival of Animated Films, Anifilm, held in Třeboň from 3rd to 8th May 2013, announces in cooperation with Komiksfest a contest for the best comic strip themed They met as strangers. Imagine what it would be like for animated characters from various films to meet. What would they say to each other, what situations would they get into?

Come up with a short and humorous story that fits into three horizontal frames and send it to us electronically. It is up to you what technique, method and form of the comic strip you choose.

Adam Uchytil and Jakub Korouš from graphic studio Lomeno have designed a new look for the fourth edition of Anifilm. They have created a graphic design concept based on the number "04". Numbers zero and four are perceived as individual letters with unlimited options. Each pair has a different nature and tells a different story. We have created a whole new alphabet of zeroes and fours representing over 100 different stories we will reveal step by step. Join us in the world of fantasy; join us in the world of animation!

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Czech television has become the main media partner of this year's Anifilm! Furthermore, Czech television celebrates 60 years of broadcast and that is why we will present the best animated works for children and adults that have been shown during those 60 years.

In 1892, French inventor Charles-Émile Reynaud introduced in the Musée Grévin in Paris his Théâtre Optique – a revolving device projecting a series of pictures which, perceived by the human eye, create an illusion of movement, or in other words, animation. It was one of the first projections for a bigger audience. October 2012 marks the 120th anniversary of this event and we would like to commemorate it during the upcoming edition of Anifilm in May. We are preparing a selection of the most interesting early Czech and foreign cartoons and the visitors can also look forward to operating the device themselves! The selection is prepared in collaboration with the National film archive that has on the occasion of its 75th anniversary published a book called Czech animated film (Český animovaný film) which comes with a DVD containing films that will be shown during the programme.

Don’t miss a unique projection of five animated shorts nominated for the Academy Award! The Oscars will be presented during a ceremony on 24th February. As every year, Anifilm will give you the opportunity to see for yourself if the award-winning film really is the best.

We continue with our presentations of renowned film schools focusing on animation. This year we have got two from the USA: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Peck School of the Arts and Milwaukee Area Technical College's Animation Program. Study programmes of both schools will be presented in person by Timothy Decker – a pedagogue, graphic artist and animator whose work includes among other things layout animation of the Simpsons. The presentations will be accompanied by projections of the schools' student films that often come under the spotlight of prestigious film festivals like Sundance or Cannes.
